Nathaniel Greene dated Nov 17, 1782, stating that 'at the last County Court held in Bladen, Captain Raiford led a mob of about 30 armed persons into the Court House while the Court was sitting, and furiously attacked a Mr. McLain, Lawyer of eminence in this State, at the bar with a naked sword, beat and dangeriously wounded him, unarmed in the exercise of his profession before the Court, under the pretense that the said McLain had given him sometime before abusive language, and was then defending a Tory.'"

MLR comment: It was obvious Gen. Greene appreciated a warrior and was going to keep him where he could fight. Capt. Robert Raiford fought the entire war. He died in 1793 in Bladen, undoubtedly to the relief of Mr. McClain or his offspring.
Robert was John's brother, and uncle of Sarah Crawford Raiford who married Gideon Barnes in 1823.

"Lucy Rebecca Spell b. c. 1766 d. bet. 1802/10. Heroine of Oconee Wars in Georgia. Born in NC as only daughter of Joseph Spell, who brought his family from Buncombe County to Galphin's Indian Agency in GA shortly after the Revolution. There she met John Raiford, a vet of that war who was staying at the Agency with other vets and Indian scouts. They married about the latter part of 1784.
They settled about 3 miles from Galphin's Agency, further down the Ogeechee River. In one of the bloody fights at Old Town between the whites and Indians, Lucy hid a young Indian boy, thereby saving his life. After nightfall, she slipped the boy down to the Ogeechee, and he escaped to his tribe west of the Oconee. The youth became the famous Gen. Wm. McIntosh, chief of the Creek Indians.
As a result of her act of mercy, the Creeks secretly adopted and named her 'White Bird', due to the color of her hair (she was small of stature, a beautiful woman with large black eyes). The Creeks always warned her of impending raids, enjoining her to be quite and at home. She invariably warned the neighbors, and on two occasions at risk of her life."

General Notes: William H(enry?) Keifer is the Keifer family patriarch as of 6 November 2001. Much seems to be known of his life but little can be authenticated. He shows up on the 1860 census in Barnesville, GA, as a harness maker, living or boarding in Gideon Barnes' hotel. Gideon become his father-in-law in June 1861 when Wm. married Sarah Virginia.
Wm. volunteered for service and was enrolled on April 2, 1862, by Francis M. Ison, at Griffin, Ga., for three years or duration of war. He mustered in to Capt. Ison's Company, Lawton's Regiment, 2nd Georgia Cavalry, stationed at Camp Stephens, on May 7, 1862. Ison's Co. later became Co. E. Wm. was assigned duty as Saddler of Company.
Apparently Wm. had a severe health problem that prevented his serving. He was discharged at Camp Hood June 24 and paid for 2 months 22 day service on June 25, 1862. The surgeon, Capt B Heard?, described his affliction as "caries of Fisnas?. This condition seriously effects locomotion...." Pay was calculated at $12.00 per month. He was paid the same amount for use and risk of horse, and $25.00 for clothing not drawn, for a total of $90.60. His discharge describes him as "born in Virginia, Fairfax Co., aged 24 yrs., 5 feet 9 inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by profession a saddler".
William died 24 Dec 1877 of "paralysis" and was buried at the Milledgeville State Hospital.
Family lore has William H. as the brother of Joseph, a farmer near Morocco crossroads, Ida Twp., Monroe Co., MI. This is where Sarah Virginia took sanctuary with her 4 boys when she left Georgia. There is no doubt Wm. & Joseph were closely related as succeeding generations visited each other frequently. Joseph's Michigan death certificate states birthplace as Pennsylvania. Parents of Joseph are Fred Keifer and Sarah Snider. Since Joseph was born 30 Mar 1835 & Wm. in 1837, did the family migrate from Pa. to Va. ? Or is one of the entries simply in error?
All Confederate States of America Army records use the spelling "Keifer". The death certificate of Joseph in Michigan in 1908 also used "Keifer", although tombstone used "Kiefer".
