Reed's of Estill Co, Ky. & Rowland's of Hancock Co, Oh.

Notes

64. William C. (Uncle Billy) Reed

"Uncle Billy" Reed lived 103 years! The 1880 US Census lists him as 99 years old. He was living with dau. & son-in-law Easter Reed and Elcanah Rogers. He passed on in 1883.

Family lore is that the early Reeds were iron workers. Northern Estill County was a major iron producing area in the 1840-1870 era. The 1850 census lists 5 Reed families living in proximity on upper Miller's Creek, near at least 2 major iron furnaces. Most of them were born in Tennessee, the third largest iron producer in the US in 1860. Judging from the ages of the children of the various families, the Reed's entered Estill about 1837-42, about the time major iron production was beginning. The area was a major cannon ball producer during the Civil War.
