Although the official end to the trip came Saturday night, the unofficial end came with our drive to Atlantic City; this made it truly coast to coast. Also, other than Peter walking around and shopping downtown on Monday, it was really the last vacation-like day of the summer. I loved it when Peter looked at a distance sign and said, "50 miles to Atlantic City? That's nothing!" Now he was beginning to understand the concept of distance in America.
Unfortunately for us, Atlantic City was cool, gray, and crowded. The cheesesteak we had for lunch wasn't bad, but the price ($8 for a meal with fries and a drink) was. Lying out on the beach we were occasionally hit with sprinkles. By dinnertime the rain was starting to come down and the more we walked the wetter we got. We made it to the Tropicana where we gambled (lost a dollar or two) and had a buffet dinner (which I think cost more and was lower in quality than the buffet in Vegas, but Peter enjoyed it). Fortunately we got in the car before the real downpour came, although driving in it was not fun. It wasn't the greatest way to say good-bye to summer, but as they say, there is no good in goodbye.
