All Roads Lead Home

Epilogue

Slim Sherman could count on the fingers of one hand the perfectly joyously happy, soul elevating, satisfying beyond measure moments of his young life so far and the early fall morning when upon hearing the familiar cadence of Traveler’s hoof-beats, he looked out to see Jess Harper riding up the drive certainly ranked at the top of that list.

What a reunion that had been! Giddy and silly, the four of them had hugged each other and literally danced around the yard. They had punched each other in the arm so many times that they were sore for days. And when the celebrating finally wound down, everyday life on the Sherman Ranch and Relay Station resumed pretty much where it had left off.

Jess had not come back unchanged, however. Somehow he had aged. Not physically but there was a maturity about him that hadn’t been there when he had left. He seemed quieter, less restless and more at peace with himself. There was a sort of serenity about him now that Slim couldn’t quite explain.

Of his adventures in the north, Jess had said comparatively little but Slim knew in time he would tell him. He guessed he could wait.

The End
