Azusa Matsudaira:
A specialist in biotechnology, Ms. Matsudaira is the TAC's resident scientist and perforce xeno-biologist. She is the quietest member of the TAC, and goes about her job with calm precision. Her fierce dedication to her job has caused her problems in her personal life. She has a young son name Jun who lives with her estranged husband.

Daitetsu Kunikida:
In his years of government service, Daitetsu Kunikida has seen much, but the corruption of modern Japan, the brutality of the small minded populace and the loss of his adopted daughter Kaede have hardened him. He is a man of few words. Isolated by his position as leader of the Terrestrial Administration Center (TAC) and his cold demeanor, Kunikida devotes his life to preserving a nation deeply flawed in his own eyes.

"Kuni" means country, "ki" is tree, "da" is a rice paddy. The leader of the TAC represents a natural Japan.

Kaede:
As Momiji's elder twin sister, Kaede has inherited the mantle of the Princess Kushinada. Shortly after the birth of the twins, she was given to the care of the TAC, and in particular Daitetsu Kunkida, in an effort to protect her from the Aragami. Kunkida has raised her as his own daugther and she is fully aware of her power over the Aragami and her destiny. Twin Kushinada turned bad.

Kome Sawaguchi:
Formerly of the JSDF, Kome believes in action as the ultimate remedy for all situations. Unfortunately, she seldm stops to think before she acts. She is the TAC's resident weapons freak and munitions expert. Her motto is: "if you still have bullets, keep shooting." Kome is also very superstitious, and will go out of her way to avoid bad luck.

Kushinada:
Good guys. Aragami die if the Kushinada are killed. Kushinada have the power to sense and fight the Aragami. Considered to be human sacrifice to save Japan from the Aragami.

Mamoru Kusanagi:
Kusanagi's life does not belong to him. As an infant, he witnessed the execution of his parents at the hands of the Aragami. Taking this son of slain Shinto priests, the Lord of the Aragami gave Kusanagi the power of 7 souls, 7 mitami embedded in his flesh, and comissioned him to protect the Kushinada from the very sacrifial rite his parents died performing. Momiji's protector. Used to protect Kaede. Originaly had 7 seeds from Orochi, gained an 8th seed from Momiji when she lost hers due to an attack by Susano-oh. Loves Momiji. Also known as Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi."

Kusanagi-no-tsurugi" is The Grasscutting Sword, a gift of the gods to the ancient emperors of Japan.

Momiji Fujimiya:
Fate. Sacrifice. These are words Momiji Fujimiya knows in a very real and personal sense. At the age of 15, her identity as the Kushinada, the ultimate human sacrifice, is revealed. The ancient myths of her native Izumo come horrifically to life as the destiny of Momiji's blood draws near. Little more than a child, inexperienced and unknown, her days are numbered. If Japan is to survive, Momiji must die. Twin Kushinada; good. Discovers ancestory later on. Is given a seed by Orochi in the first episode, loses it during an attack from Susano-oh near the end of the Perfect Collection. Loves Kusanagi and is 15 years old in the original series. 17 in the sequel; getting ready for her college entrance exams.

"Momiji" is the Japanese word for maple, specifically the red of autumn leaves.

Murakumo:
Like Kusanagi, Murakumo is a human who has been implanted with multiple mitamas. Only to Kusanagi's 7 mitamas, Murakumo has a full completement of eight. This final mitama gives him much greater power and abilities than Kusanagi. Although when Murakumo appears it is obvious that he is working against the Aragami, it is unclear just what his motives are. Kaede and Susano-oh's protector after Kaede defects. Has 8 seeds.

Neo-Aragami:
Created scientificallly using red mitamas and a plant grown in North America. Information about the kushinada was stole to try and make the neo-aragami immune to the kushinada pulse.

Orochi-no-Orochi:
One of the most powerful of the Aragami, Orochi is responsible for implanting Kusanagi with the 7 mitama that give him his power. Orochi is also a key figure in one of the most enduring of Japanese myths. In the legend, the god Susano-o tricks him into becoming drunk and slays him. As payment for this deed, Susano-o marries a maiden who was to have been sacrificed to Orochi, and she becoes the first Princess Kushinada.

Ryouko Takeuchi:
Ryouko Takeuchi is the glue that holds the TAC together. As Kunikida's right arm, she is generally first on the scene, providing valuable situation assessment and support. Often it is her heroism that buys sufficient time for the technicians to counter an Aragami attack. Ryouko is young, intelligent, pretty and determined, but her zeal for the TAC is thoroughly entwined with her administration for and devotion to Daitetsu Kunikida.

"Take" is bamboo. Her name can be translated as "Coolness-within-a-bamboo-forest."

Sakura Yamazaki:
Sakura Yamazaki is bound to be the most unusual Shinto priestess ever. Raised in America, she is loud, brash and supremely self-confident. It is this self-confidece that is both her boon and her bane as she routinely gets into more trouble than she can handle alone. Reluctant at first to join forces with the TAC, she eventually becomes an integral part of the team. Faith healer who's obsessed with a spotlight.

Shunichi Sugishita:
While a detective with the Tokyo Police, rather than a member of the TAC, Shunichi nevertheless takes an active interest in their work, and is a willing participant in their war against the Aragami. He also takes an active interest in Ryoko Takeuchi, although it is somewhat unclear whether or not his interest is motivated by her access to informaton on the Aragami. Valencia Tachibana:
From Blue Seed 2 (Beyond). Had one red mitama and was able to change similar to Kusanagi until her father, the creater of the neo-arigami, was killed. 16 years old, sign is Cancer.

Yamata-no-Orochi:
Better known only as "Orochi." Multi-headed snake/dragon Aragami with 8 seeds. One of these is what gave Kusanagi his 7 seeds. It's discovered during the last episode of the Perfect Collection that Murakumo is an Orochi.

Yoshiki Yaegashi:
Recruited fro his job at Japan's Economic Planning Agency, Yaegashi is the ultimate computer geek. A gifted and briliant programmer, he lacks many basic social skills, and still lives at home with his mother. Early in the series he writes a program to predict what animal will be Momiji's underwear on any given day.
