Symptoms


 

About 75% to 80% of women and 50% of men do not have symptoms when infected by chlamydia.

Chlamydia may not cause symptoms until the infection has spread to other parts of the body. See the section What Happens.

When symptoms develop, they usually occur 1 to 3 weeks after exposure.

Symptoms in women

bullet Painful urination
bullet Cloudy urine
bullet Vaginal discharge
bullet Vaginal bleeding with intercourse or between periods
bullet Genital itching
bullet Irregular menstrual bleeding
bullet Lower abdominal pain
bullet Fever and general tiredness
bullet Swollen and painful glands at the opening of the vagina (Bartholin glands)
bullet Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis )

Symptoms in men

bullet Painful urination (often the first symptom)
bullet Cloudy urine
bullet Watery or slimy discharge from the penis
bullet Crusting at the tip of the penis
bullet Tender anus or scrotum
bullet Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis)
