Let's face it. We don't help people as much as we could. The standard excuse is that we're too busy, we have a family/job/life to worry about, or that we just don't think about it. But the reality often is that it's just not a priority. But there ARE things you can do in the middle of that hectic life. These things will help you slow down and taste the sweetness of the moments that pass you by so fast. * Make an effort. When you see someone sad, or someone asks you for help, or they just look like they need it, why walk by without answering with a cold face? A kind word or even a smile will do for many, even if what they're asking for is money. * Write a letter. Write something of protest or support for what you believe in. Did the guy at the grocery store go out of his way to help? Do you believe that children shouldn't be forced to work in distant factories? Write to where it matters and make a difference - however small it seems, it isn't. A few sites to try:
The Hunger Site * Donate your heart, not just your money. When you donate to a charity, give of your effort or give something useful. A sponsored child will cherish a letter. A soup kitchen will benefit from your time there as from your money. Charities are run, after all, by people. * Don't just sit there. When you see something you don't like, or that you do, do something about it. This can be writing a letter, making a simple phone call, boycotting something, making a different decision for your life, or letting people know about it. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." (Attributed to Edmund Burke) * Whatever you do, take action, and do something to help someone, somewhere. That will, in the end, make you a happier, better you.
