rose Sharpen Your Mind

As you get older (and we all do, even the young among us!), you tend to lose your ability to think. Can't remember where we left the keys, can't find the remote, don't know how that door got left open, mix up directions, and on and on. Whether young or old, we can use some techniques to improve memory and thinking skills.

* Keep yourself active and relaxed. A healthy body is necessary for a healthy mind. Make sure you are getting enough healthy food and sleep so your brain gets enough oxygen too!

* Do some mental exercises. Work on crossword puzzles (try the ones at the New York Times or Hindu, which are tough), play word association games, Boggle, take quizzes, and practice music, among many other things you can do!

* Try some herbs? Gingko biloba and ginseng are said to help people regain their vim and youth. They may work for you, but check with your doctor first.

* If your memory is lagging, often repeating it to yourself in your own words (or just asking someone to repeat what they said), and visualizing it, can help you remember. When someone is introduced to you, repeat their name, use it as often as you can.

* Make associations (Adam G wears blue, makes computers new) and mnemonics (like "my very eager mother just served us nine pizzas" for the 9 planets). This works with names, directions, keys and many other things.

* Write it down. Write down numbers you tend to forget, names, appointments. Keep a single book in which you have all this information. Or put the information online. Post a calendar at home or work to keep track. Put up post-it notes in places where you tend to forget things or places you'll see them. Make shopping lists and to-do lists. Set alarms and timers.

* Learn something. Take a class or something serious that involves thinking. Try something new you've never done before, and you'll be engaged and your mind will be sharper than ever.
