How many items of clothing do you have in your closet that don't quite fit you? Are they too big, too small? Are you hoping you'll lose 5 or 10 pounds? Whatever the reason, it's clogging up your closet! Here's how to find the clothes that really do fit. * First set aside anything that doesn't QUITE fit. A little baggy here, too short there, too long here, too tight there. Try everything on. Set aside all the things that don't fit perfectly. * A perfect fit means comfortably fitted but not baggy and never constricting. For pants, this means they should fall away at the middle of your rear end and fall straight to your ankles. For tops, they shouldn't pull at the chest or shoulders. * How long is long enough? Pants should fall at least to the ankles. Tops should hit below the waist, the top to middle of the hip, depending on the style. * Check the fabric. Are there no tiny holes? Is it coming apart? How dense is the weave (look at the threads, they should be close together, unless it is a transparent top)? Is the stitching inside and out neat and flat (no threads poking out)? Set aside anything that doesn't pass these tests. * If you can get your non-perfect-fitting clothes altered, do so! Also check that they have a good shape, the fabric is together (no tiny holes), that they are flattering on you (a bad color on a great top is no good!), and that they are current or classic styles. * All your set-asides are in a pile. They go to storage or charity. Don't cry! * Look at what you have left. Pieces you love that fit, that look good on you will last you a while. So find out what's missing and go shopping! * Now, when you choose clothes, go by the rules above for fit and length. You'll look for a comfortable, flattering fit, a good color, the right style, the proper length, a good finish, and a durable fabric. These will be clothes that will last you a long time and that you'll love to wear again and again. Not to mention the compliments! |
