Role-Playing Guidelines

The first and foremost rule of Remelia MUD is that role-play is required. Anyone found blatantly not RPing will be asked to review the guidelines, and if their conduct or RP doesn't improve, they may be removed from the game. If you are only interested in level building, maxing out your stats, and killing mobs to gain experience, then this is not the MUD for you.

Here is a basic outline of what is considered good role-play:

Stay In-Character

IC (in-character) activity is defined as anything done in the mindset of your character, not your mindset as a player. For example, your character would not discuss whatever you happen to be watching on TV, nor would they ask if anyone wants to go play a different game, and so forth. Your character would be concerned with things like that underhanded deal they just made, surviving the Ebon Wood, avenging their dead friend, getting laid, etc.

This rule even applies to game-related discussions such as mechanics and asking for help. A little leeway is given to new players, but please use the help files rather than ask in-game. If it's an emergency and you really must ask, please type OOC before the rest of your text (e.g. "say OOC How do I draw my sword?"). Please don't overuse this privilege - it is only for dire emergencies (i.e. when your character might die if you took the time to look up the help files), or if there is no help file or online document on your subject.

Play Realistically

It is important to play your character in a way that makes them seem like a real person. This means that they should not perform any crazy feats such as floating around (without the proper spells, of course) or morphing into a giant lobster, or stupid things like going out and killing monsters 24/7, or exploring for the sole purpose of mapping the world (in an OOC way); don't do anything that a real person (in Remelia) could not or would not do. Use common sense, and read the docs.

Additionally, as part of playing a realistic character, you'll want to make them a unique individual by thinking about things like what motivates your character, what their personality is like, and what their background and past experiences have been like. Don't think that your made-up past experiences make you a better warrior or mage; everyone starts out as a novice with few skills, so your background should focus on how past experiences shaped your character's personality.

Play Fairly

It's important to specify the difference between in-character and out-of-character fairness.

IC fairness is not a requirement. If you are playing a thief, and you steal 1000 bronze coins from another player, they cannot complain about it to the staff. There are no rules against player killing, stealing, and other forms of IC unfairness and criminality. Such things are considered in-character; it is perfectly realistic if you are playing a malicious and unfair person to perform malicious and unfair acts. However, expect the proper IC reactions and retaliations. (If you get caught doing such things, the local law enforcement will be rather displeased. That doesn’t mean you can’t try to avoid the law, of course...).

OOC fairness is a requirement. Being unfair on an OOC level involves things like being a twink, which means using bugs in the code to your advantage (it is your duty as a player to report bugs to the staff), or putting words in another player’s mouth. Especially do not do things like emote actions for other people, which is describing their reaction to something or presuming that they perform a certain action. They control their own actions entirely.

Use Proper Grammar

People who use "u" for "you," "r" for "are," and "lol" for ":laughs" make the staff cry.

Please pay attention to your grammar and spelling when typing out dialogue or emotes. Treat your role-playing as if you were writing the first draft of a book - you don't have to look it over fifteen times for polished perfection, but do ensure that your role-play is well thought-out and nicely presented. Be creative, but don't use a thesaurus for every adjective.

Use Common Sense

Well... yeah, like it says, use common sense.

If you want to make sure a certain activity would be acceptable, please contact the staff at mud@remelia.org.
