When I was living in Seattle in the early 90s, and Jeff was there, we used to hang out together periodically. He had this cool old sportscar, and I remember once driving with him through downtown Seattle, which has many large hills... and he was going way way too fast for downtown driving, up and down over these hills. I asked if he would slow down and he said that famous James Dean line "live fast , die young, and have a good looking corpse." ...So I said "You don't really mean that." We were then stopped at a stoplight and he turned to face me with that really piercing, full-on stare (you know the one, I am sure) and said "Yeah... I really do... I never want to be as old as 40!" So... I don't know what it was in Jeff, but it has been there awhile I am sure... that desire to make a huge impact and then disappear. And of course, he must have felt he hadn't made the impact he had wanted... and he never will be able to truly see the legacy he DID leave.
