A gentle breeze blew in from the window and ruffled through the strains of sandy brown hair of the boy sitting, staring out at the blue of the sky beyond them. Somewhere in his mind the lesson his teacher was trying so hard to get across to his class registered, but to the boy it was unimportant, and thus something he didn't need to pay attention to. Instead he leant his attention to the form of a bird, far off in the sky and silhouetted against the pure blue, that danced along the currents of the air. At times he really wished that he was like those birds, able to soar and wheel and dive and be that free. Yet all he got to do was listen to the teacher explain a math problem yet again.
"Come now," the woman said, irritation touching her otherwise gentle voice, "surely someone must know the answer..." On a whim the boy turned to meet the gaze of the young female who was their teacher, something he instantly regretted. "Remus," she spoke, her voice cheery, "How about you? Can you finish the problem?" It was less of a question of being able to finish it, and more of one of wanting to do so. While, in his mind, math was good and all and kinda useful and he'd need it in the future, he really didn't want to do it now, which was the only thing that kept him from performing well in class. Thinking far enough ahead to consider how good it would be to have an education when he grew older and needed work was something the boy was not really capable of, so the desire to do the math was not with him. So the boy raised a black eyebrow, rolled his eyes and shook his head. The young teacher frowned at him, "Would you stop doing that Remus?" Enjoying himself just a tad bit too much to really stop, the boy just smiled and pushed his short blonde hair back from his eyes. "Stop doing what?" The woman crossed her arms and her face scrunched up in disapproval. "Okay, now THAT is just ridiculous!" Remus smiled at the declaration that his bright violet hair was ridiculous, "Ma'am, are you insulting a student?" "Just stop playing with your hair color. And PLEASE use something more appropriate than violet," she finally said, the tone indicating defeat. "Yes ma'am," Remus chuckled before willing his hair to a less vibrant color, a plain black. "Now... if you'd be as kind as to come up here and finish this math problem from the class. No one leaves until it is finished." From all corners of the room came a groan of displeasure as Remus rose and headed for the chalkboard. None expected the youth to get done by the time they were normally supposed to leave in five minutes. Half of Remus was tempted to go really slow, just for the fun of annoying everyone, but the other half reminded him that if he finished quickly he'd get to be home sooner and would be able to spend more time with his brother. It wasn't often that Romus was in port, but when he was the older male would tell his brother all of the stories that he'd heard from his shipmates while they were at sea. So, with Romus as motivation, the youth quickly finished the problem. The class erupted in cheers as the teacher nodded, indicating that he was right, and everyone gathered up their books and rushed to their various afternoon activities. Remus was among them, already wondering what wondrous kind of tales his brother would provide him with this time. Part 2 Back to Main Page |
