Long time “Road Warrior” RePete has accepted a new challenge...that to promote the expansion of bike paths. Why...because these allow our sport to be enjoyed away from the harassment of motor traffic. Paved paths will also allow many to appreciate the sights now reserved for the few. Then there is an awareness that we as cyclist need to build on the legacy of trails for the twenty-first century.
As reported last month, Governor Whitman has provided $7.3 million to communities for building pathways. This is separate from the National Millennium Trails Program that will celebrate, recognize and serve as a catalyst for creation of trails to be passed on to the dawning millennium. Just this past October, Hillary Clinton launched the nation’s ambitious quest to “honor the past and imagine the future” through the National Millennium Trails Program. This ranks second only to restoring historic sites/artifacts on the White House Millennium Council’s list of Ways to Commemorate the 21st century. This June, a year - long celebration begins with communities coast to coast saluting America’s most significant and most loved trails. The U.S. Department of Commerce is helping to develop tourism promotions featuring the millennium trails and challenging the tourism industry to get involved as well.
