RePete
has some interesting news to share...as reported earlier,
Governor Whitman approved $7.3 million to various communities for
the purpose of building 22,000 miles of bike paths. There are
separate national initiatives that are part of the National
Millennium Trails Program that will serve as a catalyst for the
creation of trails. RePete discussed these issues with a
Gloucester County Freeholder as part of his commitment announced
in March. Confirmation was made that the funds are designated for
pathways but no specific projects are developed. Monroe Township
is one of the municipalities scheduled to receive a portion of
this money. Further discussion with a council person indicated
that the township is waiting for their share. A formal meeting
will be scheduled for the purpose of becoming involved with any
plans. There are several web sites you can access if you wish to
know more. The
Department of Transportation has a site at www.dot.gov/mtp/. The other is the Rails to Trails
Conservancy at www.railtrail.org.
Are you interested in cycling with a pair of French students this
summer? Perhaps some of you will be willing to join them for part
of their trip? RePete has discovered that they plan to ride from
Boston to New Orleans. The route is being planned with the
possibility of passing through our area.
The Peach Blossom held on April 10 was most enjoyable. This was
the first major tour led by RePete for this year. The peach trees
were in bloom with pink and white flowers as our group pulled
into Brownies. We enjoyed a “Cuban” at this 50’s
style eatery before taking to the mountains that surround Mullica
Hill! RePete extends his thanks to all that participated! The
full ride schedule begins in May with the evening Out-Back ride
on the 5th and a tour to Atsion on the 22nd.
