SJW received a letter dated April 13 from the State that requested we recommend a bike path for the Millennium Legacy Trail Program. These trails would than be reviewed and three would be selected. From that group, one would be chosen by the governor to represent New Jersey. Our area lacks bike paths, but we do have an asphalt paved path in Williamstown. A through review of additional paths was prevented by the May 10 deadline. A letter of support was obtained from the Township of Monroe and the club approved at the May 5th meeting. We now await feedback. My thanks to Frank Campisi, Monroe Community Affairs Director, and to all in the SJW that allowed this to happen.

While on the topic of bike paths, let us look a how one city is weaving trails into the fabric of their neighborhood and downtown. Pittsburgh is transforming itself from "stealtown" to "trailtown." Three men with a vision formed the "Friends of the Riverfront" in 1989. They saw the abandoned rail beds on the north shore of the Allegheny River as a chance to "string a green necklace around the city." Today the city has a trail that runs along an active track, some factories, apartments and the new Aloca Aluminum Headquarters. The trail then opens to a broad promenade by Three Rivers Stadium. After that, the trail loops over the West End Bridge and into downtown.

Lets realize that every path started first with simply an idea…please continue to support our idea to bring pathways to our townships.

RePete is planning a trip to the refurbished Smithville in August. This is a quaint village with some nice restaurants and shops. Additional details will follow.

The First Union (i.e., Core States) Race is June 6…we will bike from Williamstown and take PATCO into Philly. See details in the rides section of this newsletter.

Enough for now…keep checking my web site for additional information and details. Quibbles is currently featuring:

You can now visit Quibbles. This area provides thought provoking insight into topics of current intertest and importance to the bicyclist with that unique slant that can only be from RePete.

Then there are the Quale sites where topics are varied, like the highly imaginative Tales of Pauline.

Also visit the Quote site that contain your comments. Here you will find submissions on Bicyclist Against Helmets and many other issues and links. Additionally, don’t forget to visit the South Jersey Wheelmen and the Outdoor Club of South Jersey web sites.
