Freewheel’n - August, 1999

Here we are in mid-summer...a good time to pause and reflect on our season. What have we accomplished? How do these compare to prior years and to our goals? Perhaps the best question, what have you done to improve your performance and that of our sport?

What Have We Accomplished?
The SJW offer many opportunities including participating in club tours and activities. Have you volunteered to support club events? The “Get Ready” tour held on June 5th provided an excellent chance to support the club. This event chaired by Bill O’Brien was held on a picture perfect day. Many did volunteer...where you among them? Regardless, commit to an upcoming event such as the Bridgeton Zoo or the Jersey Devil. Don’t forget to check out the tours provided by the club members Let’s see more rides provided by different leaders!

How Do These Compare to Prior Years and Our Goals?
Unfortunately, the club does not maintain performance for individual club members. You should be at or past the 50% mark for those that maintain there own records. Remember to include the number of times you volunteered for events or activities.

What Have You Done to Improve Your Performance and That of the Sport?
Here is a short list that every member should be able to answer correctly:
q Have you stopped to help another cyclist?
q What about sharing your knowledge in this newsletter...have you submitted an entry recently?
q Have you attended club meetings?
q Have you supported a charity ride?
q Have you ever spoken for cycling advocacy?
q Do you obey the rules of the road?
q Can our list more than three cycling events you helped with in the past year?
q Can you continue to list five items not shown?

Anyway, you get the idea...now to finish the story from the last newsletter. You will recall that the group led by our Jedi Knight had navigated through a narrow area on Kelly Drive and reached Mt. Manayunk. They decided to return to the Parkway to witness the finish. Once again at the bottom of Ridge Avenue someone was calling out! Unbelievably, RePete again had been seen in a crowd!! This turned out to be the rider that they had planned to meet at the beginning of the race. Later at Lemon Hill...there were several thousand spectators and our own John Eidemiller spotted RePete. This was just before being seen by our president. Somehow, RePete just does not blend in with large groups of people. The bike trip home would have a final surprise...the front derailleur broke on RePete's trusted Peugeot!

Say...next month the
Tour de France! You can visit my web site around the middle of the month for the advance release.

You can now visit Quibbles. This area provides thought provoking insight into topics of current intertest and importance to the bicyclist with that unique slant that can only be from RePete.

Then there are the Quale sites where topics are varied, like the highly imaginative Tales of Pauline.

Also visit the Quote site that contain your comments. Here you will find submissions on Bicyclist Against Helmets and many other issues and links. Additionally, don’t forget to visit the South Jersey Wheelmen and the Outdoor Club of South Jersey web sites.
