Freewheel’n – September 2002

Time rolls on and here we are at late season.  There are many events that lie ahead.  Among these is the SJW Convention.  This annual event, that is held each October, provides the only opportunity to ride as a club at a location outside of South Jersey.  Last year the location was Ocean City, Maryland.  The facilities were great but second to the tour.  The summer traffic was gone leaving us to travel superb open roads.  One of the highlights was having the bridge attendant stop auto traffic as we crossed entering and leaving Ocean City!!

Assateaque was a stop along the route.  This lovely island features miles of beaches along with miniature horses that run wild.  The October weather was especially nice.  We then traveled through lovely towns and communities.  The pace allowed time to take in the sites and for some photos.  You can view these on RePete’s web site.

Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France again!  This is the fourth consecutive victory in this unbelievable test of endurance and strength.  What else can be said, we are witnessing perhaps the greatest sporting accomplishment.  When RePete began seriously riding in the early 80’s, American victories in “The Tour” were non-existent…now we have the greatest cyclist to ever ride!!  With a win next year, he will join an exclusive group of the world’s greatest cyclist and athlete.  With but two more wins, he will stand alone!!!  No other cyclist has won six.  For our younger cyclist, he serves as a beacon leading the way for them to follow.  For the rest of us, we can share in his achievements.  Additional comments are included are my web site.

RePete is recovering from his accident and has begun riding again.  The Bridgeton Zoo was the first organized tour since the accident.  It was great to be back on the bike and talking with many of you.  Even chatted with the cyclist who had their flat repaired by RePete shortly before his crash.  For some strange reason, she did not wish to ride together.  Quest Tours are curtailed and there are no plans to lead any remaining rides this year.  Expect to also participate and sag in the Devil and then do the Convention.  Hope to see you at these.
