Freewheel'n - October, 2000 Decided to hop into the time machine and go back a few years to 1997. I wanted to see what we were doing. Well…in I slid and in a flash the time was November 1997. After stepping out here is what was happening: Bill O'Brien was president of the club. He provided an interesting article in the newsletter touching on the Sea Gull Century and the SJW Century. The club had $6,466 in the treasury and 132 members. Then there was the predecessor to these articles…titled RePete'n. Let's look at that piece to see what was going on… RePete'N Once again I take pen (or keyboard) in hand to provide some insights and observations on aspects of bicycling related issues. My tours for 1997 are done. I am pleased to have shared my rides with so many of you and look forward to being with you again next year. Rather than try to summarize the past year, I decided to highlight single events that will be provided in this and future Newsletters until the Peach Blossom starts my new season. Perhaps for me the past year can be billed as being full of misadventures. The strangest was when a Hutchinson tire purchased just weeks earlier developed a bubble on my Atsion Tour. This on the road surface! Apparently, the inner lining of the tire had allowed the tube to penetrate forcing the tire to blister. Luckily, the bump was noticeable which caused me to stop before the tire had a blow out. Contacted Nashbar about replacing the tire after returning from the ride. Well…guess what I was told…Nashbar discontinued selling Hutchinson tires!! Not soon enough for me… Say…I began receiving a complementary year subscription to Bicycling Magazine provided by Nashbar. (You think this a bribe for the tire issue?) Regardless, free is free and I had let my subscription expire awhile ago. I was excited to read my first issue. Only problem is that there is little to read…mostly pictures. Nice article on the Tour de France, but not enough. I now refer to this as the "John" magazine. Just enough to read while in the "John." Perhaps the price I paid for this subscription is nearly correct…maybe I can get a refund if I cancel?? Then there is the Cardio-Sport Heart Rate Monitor…one of the small yellow function buttons fell off and was lost. (No jokes please about Ol' RePete loosing his buttons.) I contacted the stateside distributor asking for some replacement that I could install. I spoke to this wonderful woman who said that the button could not be replaced…but if I sent in my watch, she would exchange for a new one!!! If your in the market for a heart rate monitor this holiday season…look at Cardio-Sport first and last. Finally, I hope to establish a home page on the Internet during the winter. Any help you members can provide will be appreciated. You can email me at repete@snip.net with your suggestions. Well we visited 1997 enough. Time to get back into the time machine and return to the present. I just wonder now…are Hutcherson tires made by Firestone???
