o       Research work under UNEP/GEF

In the last February, 2007 the final report of SWERA (Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment) project supported by UNEP/GEF was launched. All the renown organizations were associated in this work.

The pioneering project mapped the solar and wind resources of 15 developing countries using Satellite Technology and Ground Base data. Few countries where the surveys were carried out were Bangladesh , Brazil , China , Cuba , El Salvador , Ethiopia , Ghana , Guatemala , Honduras , Kenya , Nepal , Nicaragua and Sri Lanka . SWERA was an international collaboration between UNEP and agencies including the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory, GRID/Sioux Falls, GTZ of Germany, the State University of New York, the Danish National Laboratory Risoe, the Tata Energy Research Institute and the space agencies of Germany and Brazil . The final report of this project is available at www.swera.unep.net.

o       Research work under Dept. of APECE

A research project entitled “Development of rooftop grid-connected solar PV system for Renewable Energy Research Centre, Dhaka University”, funded by Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology, Govt. of Bangladesh has been established at the Renewable Energy Research Centre under supervision of Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim Mazumder, Department of Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Dhaka University . The research project has successfully completed its first stage. Here it is to be noted that this is the first successful work in Bangladesh in this aspect. The PV array was installed on the rooftop of the RERC building using steel frame structure. As the capacity of the system is considered to be 1 KW, the peak output of the panel is selected to be 1.5 KW.

o       Research work for higher degrees

Students of M. Sc/ M. Phil/ Ph. D and interested in renewable energy generally get involved with RERC. Two students of Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering Department are enrolling their Ph. D research works in this Centre under the direct supervision of Prof. N C Bhowmik (Director of Renewable Energy Research Centre) and Prof. Jalalur Rahman, Dept. of APECE. The research topics and name of the research fellows are given below:

1.      Topic: Potential of Solar Energy utilization and CO2 mitigation in Bangladesh

Student: Himangshu Ranjan Ghosh

2.      Topic: Feasibility Study of Renewable Energy Systems in Bangladesh

Student: Shafiuzzaman Khan Khadem

o       Research works (Miscellaneous)

A research scalars team, supervised by Dr. Muhtasham Hussain (Former Prof. of the Dept. of Physics, Former Director of RERC, President of Bangladesh Solar Energy Society) and Director regularly do some research work on various topics. Some on going research activities are listed below:

§         Assessment of Solar pumping system

§         Assessment of Solar dryer

§         Potential of  Water Heater system in large scale

§         Potential Solar Home System in large scale

§         Assessment of Solar PV power for a Base Station Transceiver

§         Potential of solar cooker where cylinder gas is the only source of fuel

§         Planning and Assessment of Solar indoor testing lab

§         Research on low power LED and CFC lantern to replace kerosene driven lanterns

Other Activities

For research work, dissemination of information/knowledge and manpower development, RERC is sustaining some other activities. Few of them are listed below:

o       Collection of Solar Radiation data

This centre is measuring the different types of radiation data like global, diffuse and tilted surface radiation regularly. It has been collecting the data in one minute interval since 2002. It is also measuring direct radiation manually whenever the sky is clear. RERC has collected recent solar radiation data from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department with whose a coordination venture was done on solar radiation data measurement.

o       Library

Renewable Energy Research Centre collects different renewable energy related national and international journals and documents regularly. It is also in touch with the update information via internet. Teachers, Students of different academic and research organizations share this advantage. In this year some books and journals were also added in the library.
