  3. DECISIONS ABOUT TECHNOLOGY can be daunting for a school, particularly if no one there has experience with hardware, software, or networking. That's why the Department's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) produced a publication now available (in HTML) on the web, "Technology @ Your Fingertips: A Guide to Implementing Technology Solutions for Education Agencies & Institutions." The 100-page publication tells how to...
Define your needs & technical requirements
      Develop a "needs assessment"
Determine what resources you have & what resources you will need
Implement, support, & maintain your technology solution
      Provide effective training
      And more.
The complete text is at: Technology @ Your Fingertips or you can read or download the PDF file at http://nces.ed.gov/pubs98/98293.pdf Paper copies are available by calling the Department's publications distribution center, EDPubs, at 1-877-4EDPubs (1-877-433-7827).
  4. Simon & Schusters distributed learning group has two galleries ripe with course content. The amount of content varies. Some books are complete courses online complete with E books. Some are simply online study guides. You can find a listing for them at: http://www.abacon.com/gallery/.
  5. A Free webzine at The Technology Source that will assist educators as they face the challenge of integrating information technology tools in teaching and in managing educational organizations. Among the articles in this month's Vision article brings us an interview with UNC President Molly Broad, former Executive Vice President of the University of California State University System and a major player in the development of the California Virtual University. Ms. Broad discusses the potential of using information technology tools in the classroom, barriers to its use, and the state of virtual learning today. James L. Spira discusses the inherent differences between progressive education and essentialist education as applied to distance learning in this month's Commentary. By applying progressive education philosophy to the use of technology in learning, instructors can develop a program that is more interactive, creative, and natural than those currently prevalent.

By clicking on a group you will be able to view an automaticly generated page with all icons from that group, if you are on a slow link, prepare to wait.
  13. Web Site Resources When creating your first Web site is KISS. "keep it simple, smart." Web Site Resources breaks down some of the essential tools you'll need to set up your site--namely, HTML editors, art tools, FTP tools, counters, and more. Within each topic is a chart that lists and links the top tools along with ratings information for ease of use, help files, cost where applicable, and many other helpful descriptors.
  14. To ensure the fonts on your site look good on all platforms, go to: http://www.browsersnapshot.com/?journalWhen designing a site Web site owners may be tempted to use some new or cool font. But before you do, realize that doing so can cause serious compatibility issues when someone tries to access your site from another browser or platform that does not have that font. Try to choose only from the fonts that come pre-installed in your computer. Keep in mind that the installed fonts in a PC aren't necessarily installed in a Mac. However, most of the basic fonts will usually have similar counterparts in the other platform.
