- DECISIONS ABOUT TECHNOLOGY can be daunting for a school, particularly if no one there has experience with hardware,
software, or networking. That's why the Department's National Center for Education
Statistics (NCES) produced a publication now available (in HTML) on the web, "Technology @ Your Finger tips: A Guide to Implementing Technology Solutions for Education Agencies &
Institutions." The 100-page publication tells how to...
Define your needs & technical requirements
- Develop a "needs assessment"
- Determine what resources you have & what resources
you will need
- Implement, support, & maintain your technology solution
- Provide effective training
- And more.

- A Free webzine at The Technology Source

face the challenge of integrating information technology tools in teaching
and in managing educational organizations. Among the articles in this month's Vision article brings us an interview with UNC President Molly
Broad, former Executive Vice President of the University of California State
University System and a major player in the development of the California Virtual
University. Ms. Broad discusses the potential of using information technology
tools in the classroom, barriers to its use, and the state of virtual learning
today. James L. Spira discusses the inherent differences between progressive
education and essentialist education as applied to distance learning in this
month's Commentary. By applying progressive education philosophy to the use of
technology in learning, instructors can develop a program that is more
interactive, creative, and natural than those currently prevalent.

Teachers often work in isolation and have very little time to discuss educational issues with other educators. I suggest that ListServs are a good way to end the isolation and talk to others who share your interest. Here are some List Servs that educators may want to join, to engage in interesting dialog with other educators.

- Peoria Astronomical Society PAS offers a swell starting point, with a calendar of the month's celestial events, galaxies of (undescribed) links, constellation notes, and a slew of data on the solar system's most prominent bodies. You also get a beginner's guide to stargazing, a fascinating article on black holes, and a VRML 3D star map. Sure, this production lacks the technical firepower of a NASA site, but is still worth a look.
- SETI
The first scientific paper discussing the feasibility of
radio astronomical searches for extraterrestrial was
published in 1959 by Cocconi and Morrison. The first SETI
search using a radio telescope was conducted as Project
Ozma by Frank Drake in 1960 at Greenbank, WVa. Carl Sagan
was involved in SETI questions and research in the early
days. In 1966, he published "Intelligent Life in the
Universe" which is a "translation, extension and revision"
of "Universe, Life, Mind" by I. S. Shklovakii, a Russian
scientist. In 1985, Sagan published the novel "Contact"
which was the basis for the film. The SETI Institute was
founded in 1985 to conduct SETI research in conjunction with
the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The SETI Institute is a non-profit scientific and educational
research organization, and we do conduct SETI science which
is now privately funded. However, the novel, "CONTACT" was
not based upon the Institute even though the principal
scientists at the Institute were well known to Carl Sagan.

medium of the Internet is a constantly changing one. New sites
and sources of information are being added daily. New places will
appear frequently and those that aren't maintained can disappear
quickly, as a result this page is always under construction. Let
us know if a link does not work, or if you have a site that you
think should be added. Please check back often, and let us know
what you think.
