About me

I am within three years of my retirement, and as I look back over my work history, I take pride in the number of divesified careers I have enjoyed. I enjoyed the humor of the following as it sums up some of my thoughts towards work and where it can take us. More About me

  1. California History Teachers Discussion Board This site suggested by a reader is a discussion/ list for history teachers in California (K-12), but teachers from other states may wish to join or find it useful. The list owner is a social studies teacher who felt like they were "swimming upstream" alone, and thought, "Wouldn’t it be great if I had a list to post on where I could get some ideas and maybe help some other folks out?"The list is designed to generate discussion from both elementary and secondary teachers on creative lessons, good presentations, strategies, tips, post-baccalaureate education (aka "going back to school") recommended seminars and conferences, etc.
  2. Faith in Schools is sponsored by the four main churches in Ireland - Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian - and the Belfast Hebrew Community. I am currently involved in looking at how we can implement a program to help students learn social responsibility at my school, this site is timely and provides me with a starting point which will help me develop materials for my program.

The purpose of the site is to support religious studies in schools and to assist in the exploration of the Core Curriculum in Religious Education which was agreed by these four churches and approved by the Department of Education for Northern Ireland An example of the type of classroom activity found on the site:

"Major historical events seldom occur without warning. The foundation for World War I began to be laid as early as the 1870's. Ask the students to develop a timeline from 1870 to 1914 illustrating the minor conflicts and disagreements between European nations that finally resulted in the outbreak of World War I."

  3. The Great Canadian History Page This page was created by a teacher Bob Vavra who teaches Social Studies/History to grade eight to twelve students at Winston High School in Saskatchewan. He states in his introduction to his site "As an educator one of the toughest things I face, is trying to find good resources to use in my classes. As a teacher I want these resources to be entertaining as well as informative. Sometimes these resources are hard to find." So he found a few resources that Social Studies/History teachers can use to help them teach students.
  4. Let's Go Around the World This site "Around the World Web" is an educational, child-friendly and child-safe site which consists of language arts and curriculum-based "learning adventures" focusing on different regions/cultures of the world. Current adventures focus on East Africa and the Amazon rain forest. The site is designed for elementary/middle school aged children and their teachers/parents and it features color photography, illustrated stories, poetry, student art/writing from around the world, music, video, and teacher pages connecting the content to all areas of the curriculum.
  5. Egyptian Ministry of Tourism The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism's Official Site at has a large section covering very early Christian monuments and history sections on the early Christian movement. ST. Catherine's Monastery is particularly interesting, with pictures of Mt. Sinai and several ancient chapel, along with the Burning Bush chapel said to be located on the site of Moses' burning bush. In addition, there is a new section which is still under construction, but expanding, under Special Editions in the antiquities section which specifically covers the christian history in Egypt (along with the less specific information covered in the The Roman and Byzantine Periods under the history section).
My thanks for Sarah for this link and the introduction to it.
  6. Guided Education Tours This site offers teachers a chance to preview and to purchase for a small fee education units developed by other teachers. The units are structured, topical on-line explorations of  web sites that are reached by hyper-links, right from the unit text.  The units are web pages, not programs.  They will work on any system.  Students are given activities and knowledge building exercises to perform at each web site.  At the end of each unit students tie their learning together in meaningful culminating activities. This site allows you to preview the material and then if you want to save yourself tons of work you can purchase the unit from them. The previews look good. Note: the site is closed on Sundays.
Thanks to Scott Cunningham for this link idea.
