Hi Folks,

Here's some tips to follow, in whatever career you wish to follow.

  1. Decide what you want to become.
There are a lot of people, and things around us, which inspire us to become something, please take care that these things are only sources of inspiration and are not forces. Always take any advice relating to career choice from highly educated persons. Inspite of this, you will find that most highly educated people will try to advertise their brand, this is natural as they know that the most. Hence it is a wise idea, to consult two or more persons. After you have decided what you want to become, then consult at least two more people who are highly educated in that field you have chosen.

  2. Know the pro's and con's.
So now you decided what you want to become, and now are meeting some studs of that field, so get to know form them what are the pro's and con's of that field. There might be some risks, and there might be some advantages. Its good to know both so that you can digest both easily after you achive them.

Note: I should like to say, that you should also see, what lifestyle offerings are there after the age of 30 or marriage, in the career choice you have made and if it is suitable to you. e.g. some fields might give you a lot of money, and some may give more of satisfaction, or some may give both. eg, my field gives me both.(at least at the moment). You should also be able to find enough time for your wife, kids and yourself, after hammering you head in the office.

  3. Setting the GOAL.
Some people like to associate this with the old arjuna, and aiming at the parrot's eye kind of story. However in real life the game is not like archery but perhaps more like golf . You have to put the ball in the hole, no matter how many shots you take, the quicker you get it in, the better, and you just have to take care that you go more closer to the hole, with every shot. Hence even if you aim very high (compared to the people around you) its okay because you know that you can reach that goal with 4-5 shots.(while they think that it has to be done in one shot)

My recommendation is hence aim the highest possible. There is no need to associate your personal capabilities at the time of setting the goal.

  4. Getting the GOAL.
Its a good idea to break the main goal, into a lot of smaller sub-goals which are easily achievable. The question of personal capability, is important in this stage. Your personal capability may cause some unrest, if you have a failure, in one of your sub-goals. A work around for this is have a sub-goal set even if you have a failure some where. Make a point to draw a flow chart for your career path, and there will surely be enough "if-then" constructs, try to make all them "if-then-else". I was greatly helped by this kind of strategy. Always PREPARE for the worst, and HOPE for the best. Also make it a habbit to carry a lot of patience.

Note: Please do not take marks earned in school/college as reference, in any place as they are nowhere close to accurate. You shall see this later, as in my case.... Marks are used as a reference only when the volume of people are large. eg, in colleges a large volume of people take admissions, it is not possible to interview all of them, so the admin has to just stick to the marks. This can also be seen in campus recruiting of big companies, when they have to take a lot of people. They do not have the time to see how each person is, hence they will again stick to marks, though they do take interviews these are for name-sake and are very quick. When it comes to smaller companies/start-ups or when they have to select very few people, then it is seen that the performance evaluation is not based of these marks, but on actual interview.

  5. After getting the GOAL.
Its a moment of rejoicing, few days of walking on air, but then after a time you will again become a typical goal-less, but I hope by that time you have enough experience to tackle the situation....

Something about myself

I was always an average student in school. I used to score, only about 60-70%, throughout my ten years in school. The highest I reached was 70.71% in my tenth, SSC. My ambition was to become an electronics engineer, right from about 8th standard. The only thing important in any engineering is Mathematics, and I was very good at it thanks to the lot of basic books my father had provided me as against the "Vikas Guides" and "Class notes" used by others, who hated the subject. (FYI I only hated those stupid books). So back to the point my goal was a ME or higher in electronics, and with that 60-70% marks I would have thought that it was never possible, to get into BE. or perhaps getting into 12th Science was itself difficult. Another option which I was also trying was to do a Masters in Computer Science, here too Maths was the key. Hence my plan then used to think of both the fields at the same time.

I also had a flow chart in mind, which was some what like,

(pink shows the path I followed)

The above flow chart is fairly short, and I can still draw a lot of branches, into it. This is beyond the scope of this small page, besides this will kind of advertise my trade. You can draw similar flows in case your field is into genetics/botany or any field whatsoever. Just make sure you have planned to be on track even if you have failures at any step.

I hope this information helps out someone to make a good career for him/herself, rather than get caught in the general trend of competing for marks...

Lastly as a piece of hope for the people who are still hopless here are some facts.

  • I had 70.71% at X
  • then 49% at XII
  • only 68% at BSc, yet could crack MSc entrance at IITB
  • CPI of 6.24 with a min SPI of 4.24 at MSc (CPI = cumulative perf index, SPI = semester perf index) again with a back log of 2 subjects I cleared later by re-exam. Yet I could crack GATE

There is no point in losing hope!!
