Put into Practice (Part 2): Written by Exodus, Original Story by Exodus A climactic battle was happening in the town of Fawra, the town protector had been cruelly murdered, and the empire was taking no prisoners. The Resistors had brought everyone they could to help evacuate the town, after deciding that beating the empire’s whole army would be too much, even for them. But now Morn had played a new trump card, in the form of Angus, now his newest robot, and it seemed that no one could beat him. “The mission must be completed.” said Angus again, with hardly any emotions in his tone, darting towards Ross and pushing him into a building, Ross pulled his metal arm free and slammed it into Angus’ screen, Angus glared at him as if remembering their battles, and slammed Ross into the wall, but this caused the entire building to collapse on the both of them. “Ross!” cried Naga and Ruwin in concern. A figure broke through the rubble and stretched out. “I’d rather not have any more buildings fall on me...” groaned Ross, bending his metal fingers back in place. A black shadow swept up from behind and rammed Ross’ face into the floor. “... Mission...” said Angus, sparkling with electricity around the eyes. Ross was pinned down, and tried to reach up, but couldn’t quite make it. “Com... plete...” A long crystal staff suddenly hit the robot in the neck and was jammed there, Angus struggled to pull it free, while Ross slipped out from under the robot. “Must...” It then threw it back at its creator, Ryan, he attempted to avoid it, and moved free of a killing hit, but it hit him none-the-less, and impaled his arm. The robot turned to Ross, who wasn’t quite up yet, but before it could take advantage, Bert, the merciless shooter, ploughed the machine’s chest with bullets, but only serving as a distraction, another ray was fired, exploding the gun and throwing the large man back, he was hurting, but not from a lethal hit. Ross thrust his sword forward, only to have it caught by the robot’s hand, the two struggled, until the sword was put under too much strain, and broke apart, Ross followed up with his metal hand, and dealt a few hits to the robot’s main body, but it wasn’t making fast progress. Ross was blocked, and the metal hand was grasped by the robot’s, crushing it with far more power than Ross could currently achieve, the hand was crushed, and twisted until it simply snapped off Ross’ prosthetic shoulder. Ross was without an effective weapon, the robot drew out its gun and blasted Ross with a quick but effective ray, Ross spun in the air, and landed hard, his broken metal arm followed when the robot tossed it away like junk. “Gear’s not gonna be too happy when I ask him to replace this...” groaned Ross. Naga ran to Ross to check up on him, she’d showed a lot of concern for him lately, there wasn’t anything particular between them, but Naga came from a place that adored strength, even though Ross’ physical strength was from an artificial source, his bravery and sheer courage was what Naga respected. “Raaaarrr!!!” screamed Lucy, her cyborg implants straining as she charged onwards and slammed into the evil machine, her laser sword shot out to its maximum height, and she slammed it against the robot, trying to find a weak point that her weapon could break through, but she didn’t get close to cutting into it, and the robot simply beat her back with a powerful punch, but it failed to see her fire an energy blast from her gun attachment, before it hit its screen and left it blinded. “Get them out of here.” Ross told some of the Resistance soldiers nearby, and Lucy, Ryan and Bert were escorted away with assistance from their fellow fighters. Ross could see that their efforts were futile, and further fighting could only lead to casualties. But as long as more people could be saved, he, Naga and Ruwin would keep on fighting against this ‘unstoppable’ machine. Luckily, they didn’t have to, a large blue energy blast hit the robot and caused it to tumble back. Turok ran forward and stood in front of the Resistors. “We’ve done all we can to help the survivors, Lucia can handle getting them to safety, I just saw the robot. Its a Mecha Knight like me, any ideas who it is?” “It doesn’t matter!” shouted Ruwin, “It keeps on babblin’ ‘bout a mission it must complete, it doesn’t have a sense o’ self like you do.” “Good, then I won’t feel quite so guilty about putting it down.” smiled Turok, as he ran forward, holding his fist back in order to deal maximum damage when he reached and punched the robot. Turok dealt a fine hit, and the black robot fell back, a visible dent in its body armour. “Its takes a robot to beat a robot. No offense Ross.” smiled Turok. “The... mission...” The robot couldn’t quite lift itself up, but as Turok approached it, the pulse rifle was raised, and fired, Turok was blasted back, but sent another of his own energy bolts at the robot, only, a red barrier appeared and deflected it. “Defense And strength... This is going to be tough, but I have to succeed...” thought Turok out loud. Turok went in close and aimed a powerful punch, but a red transparent sword appeared from the hilt on the robot’s wrist to block it, Turok stumbled back, and the robot was back on its feet. “M, Mission...” The robot leapt into the air, raising its sword, Turok quickly rose his fist, and deflected the descending slice with a precise punch, hitting the flat of the blade, Turok followed up with an energy blast, but the shield came up again to deflect it. “Its style... It seems... familiar...” pondered Turok. The sword was still functioning, and swung at Turok, who pulled himself back, following up with another energy blast, that shattered the sword and damaged the unique hilt. Turok quickly punched the other arm, the one that wielded the strange shield, and backed away in an attempt to hit and run, so to speak. He failed. The pulse rifle rose up, and hit Turok up close, and with a painful scream, Turok crashed down, out of strength having been blasted twice by the full force of the Pulse Rifle. “Turok...” said Naga worryingly. “Okay, so I lost, but I did some damage...” he groaned. “Its not like any of the opponents we’ve gone against, I can’t read it, its just a soulless machine.” commented Ross. “Mission...” “Aw man, here it comes!” panicked Ruwin. A bright explosion occurred a couple of blocks away, and both Krytus and Brutor flew up a great height before falling, Kirie ran forward shortly after to join the group. “Well, I took care of them at last, why’s everyone gathered-” “Kirie, stay back, this machine has stood up ta all of us an’ kept on goin’.” explained Ruwin. “But you guys are the physical fighters, allow the magic-user to do her thing...” said Kirie confidently. “Kirie!...” panted Gear, with Lucia by his side. “Gear?” Kirie asked surprised. “Kirie, we’ve gathered as many people as we can, Lucia fed back to me on the situation.” he explained. “But what about the robot?” shouted Kirie. “If its too powerful, we’ll get it another day, provided we get the survivors out, we’ll have done everything we can, let the empire have these ruins. Sorry Ruwin.” said Gear. “Its jus’ a town, Ah could barely stand ta be here durin’ childhood, as long as we save as many people as we can, you’re right.” stated Ruwin sadly. “Must be...” groaned the robot as it walked forward with difficulty. “Go... GO!” shouted Kirie, standing between the robot and her friends, Naga took off first, escorting a couple of people to the boat, then Ross and Gear, while Turok and Lucia stayed to support Kirie should she fail. “Soulless machine?... Its too soon for Morn to be building pure robots with so much intelligence. For this robot to perform so well, I’m pretty sure there’s someone deep inside, manipulated by the machines, I just have to dig deep and awaken them.” pondered Kirie. Kirie’s psychic abilities shot into the robot and circulated through the smallest holes, until it reached the dormant mind of Angus, surrounded by mind-altering machines. “Oh my god... Angus...” realised Kirie. “I knew his style was familiar.” added Turok, “But its as if he’s lost all conscience... Oh Angus...” “No, machines are what have changed him, I’m sure I can break them and save him.” said Kirie firmly. Kirie shot another bright beam at Angus’ head, playing with the circuitry, manipulating the mechanics, anything to stop them from controlling Angus’ body. “K... Kirie?...” he muttered in thought. “Oh Angus, yes, its me.” spoke Kirie through Angus’ mind, “This is important, the empire is evil, they’ve manipulated you, they’ve-” “Its... all mah fault...” “No Angus, you can’t say that.” “Its... Must be Completed...” said Angus, now reverted to a soulless killer again. “What?” “Evil!!!” he screamed. Lucia darted past, using her jets, and practically tackled Kirie aside, as Angus clutched his head, and then started firing wildly. “That’s enough magic for one day.” ordered Turok. “Wait, I can save him!” retorted Kirie. “No Kirie, I think he’s a lost cause...” sighed Lucia. Lucia and Turok held onto a screaming and struggling Kirie until they reached the docks. “Um, what did she do?” questioned Gear. “She drove Angus kinda insane, I don’t think he can be saved.” explained Turok sadly. “He can! He can! Just give me some more time!” screamed Kirie. “Its no good, let’s leave and get back to this when we’re more prepared!” shouted Ross, before turning back to Angus, who had followed them. “The... mission...” said Angus, still malfunctioning from the battle and the psychic assault, another shot went off, aimed for Kirie. She gasped, “Angus, no!” Turok and Lucia saw, and dived in front of her, and took the full force of the blast, while Angus stared at how far the Resistors went for each other. “Aaarrrggghhh!!!” they screamed, the energy was at a much higher setting than before, and their armour was being torn apart. “Noooo!” screamed Kirie, and sent out a yellow beam at Angus, which hit him hard, but concentrated on his mind rather than the machines. “Angus!” shouted Kirie’s voice in his head, “How long are you going to kid yourself?! The empire is not where you belong, stop listening to what they’re saying, and for once, view the events through your own eyes and judge for yourself who is right!” “M... Mission...” groaned Angus. “Kirie, what’s going on?” questioned Gear. “Under all that programming, he’s in there, I can sense it, but the computers have taken over, and wiped out his honour and will, without it, he’s been turned into a silent killer... Surely Morn must be behind this...” said explained with tears in her eyes. “Or maybe Angus wanted it to be that way, he’s always failed because of his honour.” said Ross accusingly. Gear sighed, “We can’t rule out that possibility.” Kirie growled a little at their opinions, “Guys, have some faith, give me time to-” Angus was close, but was spitting out different words, “Mission... Complete... Must... Resistors... Evil... Not tae be trusted... KIRIE!!!” With that, he started shooting randomly, at the Resistors, at the buildings, and the villagers trying to escape. “No...” said Ross, shocked as people they were trying to save were hit hard and destroyed. “Stop it Kirie! He’s too far gone to save him! We can’t beat him with all these people around, and we absolutely have to leave!” screamed Turok angrily. “But... Angus...” she pleaded. Something poked at her neck and she fell unconscious, Ruwin gave a cross but sad look at the Resistors, but one to show that this was for the greater good, he picked up Kirie, and the Resistors left with the villagers they’d managed to save by boat. Angus was still under the effects of Kirie’s manipulation gone sour, he fell to the ground and clutched his head in agony, “Resistors... Empire... Evil... Evil!... EVIL!!!...” Blue electricity sparkled around his head and he screamed out, his boot jets activated and he floated into the air, and an uncontrolled shot was aimed at the floor beneath him, the explosion ripped through his damaged armour and boot jets, wrecking them too. Angus shot into the air at great speed, before plummeting, miles and miles away from Fawra. The Resistors didn’t see this though, all they saw were the troopers cheering in success, as the town was finally theirs, at the cost of so many lives... A lot later, and at the Resistance Base, the refugees were offered a place to stay, for a little while, until living arrangements in other towns could be arranged. The mood was depressing, even with the amount of soldiers used, Fawra had fallen to the empire, and many of its citizens had died. Gear called the other Resistors to the old storage room for the unveiling. “I know circumstances and moods have changed since yesterday, but its still necessary to open this new facility to us.” The curtains were raised, and inside was a plain silver room with nothing inside. There were mumblings among the group, until Gear signalled for them to step inside. Once then, Gear spoke, “Activate Program 52.” And the silver walls and floor disappeared totally, and was replaced by a barren land, along with twenty empire troopers boasting large robotic weapons. The Resistors hadn’t had a chance to place their weapons in storage, and so reacted straight away, what was this strange occurrence that had teleported them into a battle? Kirie and Edwina used their magic to blast four of them, while Turok and Lucia used their strength and guns, Samia and Dagger took desperate measures and fatally wounded two soldiers each, while Ross, Gear, Naga and Ruwin used their usual weapons to put an end to the battle. Each trooper, upon being defeated, fell and exploded into a dusty liquid that stained the floor. “End program.” spoke Gear, and the Resistors found themselves once again standing in the silver room. “Gear, whut the heck wus that?!” shouted Ruwin. “Don’t worry, none of you could’ve been harmed by those troopers, this is what I’ve been working on. In comparison to the empire, the Resistors haven’t been able to train to the measures that they do, because of our different morals, but now, with the Solid Light Room in our possession, a near infinite amount of possible scenarios can be programmed, including obstacles, landmarks and enemies, and the best part is you can’t be harmed.” explained Gear calmly. “That wus intense...” said Ruwin tiredly, “It wus as if that wus really happenin’...” “Provided its programmed properly, this machine can imitate any opponent, any background and any scenario. We’re going to need it if we’re going to get stronger, and become better at making the right decisions.” added Gear. “Gear, what happened today wasn’t your fault. You couldn’t have predicted that Angus would be so powerful, just think of what would have happened if we’d come any later, no one would have survived. You can’t save everyone... You just have to do the best job you can.” comforted Kirie, noticing Gear was a little down during the explanation. “Thank you Kirie, but my statement stands, we are to train more often so that we can become better freedom fighters, that’s an order, and the world depends on it” “Yes Sir.” said everyone as if they were in an army, they technically were but didn’t usually speak in unison or talk back in that fashion to Gear. “I wonder what happened to Angus...” pondered Kirie. “Maybe you did the right thing, and killed him.” said Ross rudely. “Ross!” “What? His honour being wiped is too much of a possibility of something he’d choose to do, all those people he killed, they’ll be on his head forever, no matter if he remembers doing the job or not.” spat Ross. “Or maybe the empire fixed him, and he’ll be back.” suggested Gear. “All I know is, finding Angus’ original self is going to be far tougher than I imagined...” said Kirie sadly... At the empire, Morn was contacted in his lab. “Morn, all is well, not only is Fawra ours, but a squadron of soldiers wiped out the two remaining landmarks in North Scion. With Gradas and Foren gone, the empire has now claimed two kingdoms. I must congratulate you on the assistance, that robot of yours was spectacular, and kept the Resistors too busy to interfere with the other conquests, I even heard they had to run away from it...” congratulated Iyaxxl, before chuckling at the last sentence, “I give you permission to build more robots for the empire.” explained Iyaxxl proudly. “Thank you Sir.” replied Morn. “Now where is it? It deserves to be promoted, along with Angus, wherever he is...” “That might be a problem Sir... in both cases.” said Morn nervously. “You mean...” “Uh huh...” “And Angus...” “Uh huh...” “And that robot...” “Uh huh.” “So, you went against my orders Again, and lost yet another fine warrior?!” shouted Iyaxxl upon piecing things together. “Well, at least the chip was tested, now there shouldn’t be any problems when the Overrun Project begins.” grinned Morn nervously. “DON’T TRY TO SLIP OUT OUT OF THIS! Angus may not have been the greatest fighter, but I had other plans for him!” shouted the emperor. “You what?...” questioned Morn. “If Angus didn’t change his ways and fight as I wanted him to, then I would have made Angus my guardian instead!” “Your... guardian? But you don’t need a guardian, thanks to myself, I-” “Shut up Morn, do you not realise how useful Angus would have been as my guardian?!” “He’s so honourable he would have given up his own life for you if the event arose...” “Exactly, and now I must search for someone else. Begin the Overrun Project, The north kingdom Haprin is our new target. But I warn you Morn, if any more of your robots go out of control, then you are finished!” Iyaxxl switched off the link, and Morn smiled. “Heh, he forgot to ban me from experimenting on robots, and I long as I can continue to build and test my machines, I will someday build robots superior even to you Iyaxxl, and I Will transcend beyond you. When that day happens, you’re finished!...” Next: “Exit Morpher” Back to Part 1 Click to read the next story: "Exit Morpher” Back to “The Complete Set” Back to the Library
