Those who support abortion would like us to believe that abortion is the most important right a woman could have, and that anyone who does not support abortion is anti-woman. The question we need to examine closely, however, is who is it that really benefits from abortion? Is it really the woman, or could it possibly be the man who truly benefits? How can a man benefit from abortion? The option of abortion has now made it much easier for men to use women without the need to worry about the consequences of their actions. Legalized abortion has lifted the weight of responsibility completely from the shoulders of men and placed it all squarely on the shoulders of women alone. It allows the man to simply walk away from the situation, and, in many cases, this is often the reason why women feel desperate enough to choose abortion. It is not because it is something she wishes to choose for herself, but the fear of being abandoned and left alone to care for the child all by herself that pushes her to make this choice. I was listening to an FM radio talk show around January 2002, when the host had a guest calling himself Professor X on. Prof. X was talking about how he, a college professor of philosophy around 35 years old, dated 18 year old college girls (although "slept with" would have been more accurate, as he admitted that sex alone was his goal in these "relationships"), including his own students. A listener called in and asked, "What if one of these girls came to you and told you she was pregnant?" Without missing a beat, he told the caller, "I'd tell her to have an abortion." He then went on to say that he would do the "responsible" thing and pay for it, but other than that, he clearly told the caller that this girl would be on her own. If she chose to have the baby, well that would be her problem, because, after all, it was her choice. Other than paying for the abortion, he declared he would offer her no other support at all. This Professor X is typical of the type of man who supports and benefits from abortion. Another includes former President Bill Clinton, notorious for the way he uses women. It was one of Clinton's goals to remove all restrictions from abortion. What do you truly think motivates such strong supporters of "a woman's right to choose"? Empirical studies have also demonstrated that male coercion and pressure play a sizable role in many women's abortion decisions. Men also get to play the "blame game" as well. Whatever emotional problems result from the abortion, whether experienced by the man or woman, the man is in a position, thanks to legalized abortion, to lay all the blame upon the women, no matter what his role truly was in the decision making process. As far as some men are concerned, if the woman is suffering, it was her own decision that caused it. If, on the other hand, he is the one whose suffering, he can still blame her, as he had no legal say in the matter anyway. Men also get to avoid the physical risks of abortion as well, while the woman risks serious injury or even death from the procedure. |
