![]() Intercessor of the Unborn In 1531, out Lady Mary appeared to a poor Indian at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of Mexico City (and the geographic center of all the Americas), and identified herself as the Mother of the True God. She instructed this devoted man, Juan Diego, to have the bishop build a temple on the site in her honor. "Know for certain the smallest of my sons, that I am the Perfect, Forever Virgin, Holy Mary, Mother of the True God, for whom everyone lives. He is Creator of the people. He is Lord of all things. He is master of Heaven and Earth. I ardently desire that a little sacred house be built here for me where I will reveal Him, I will exalt Him, I will give Him to the people through my personal love, through my compassionate look, through my help and through my salvation. Because I am, in truth, your compassionate mother, the mother of all who live as one in this land and of all mankind, of all those who love me, of those who cry to me, of those who have confidence in me, because here I will hear your weeping and your sadness and will remedy and alleviate your sufferings, your miseries and misfortunes. Therefore in order to realize my intentions, go to the palace of the Bishop of Mexico and tell him that I sent you and how much it is my desire to have a house built here on this simple ground, my temple. You will tell him everything you saw and what you have heard. Be assured as to how much I will be grateful and I will repay you. You have already heard, my littlest son, my love as a mother and my words. Now go and do your part." After hearing the request, the Bishop asked for Juan Diego to come back with a sign. Returning to the site, he found the hill covered with roses and Mary visited him again, telling him to return to the Bishop with the roses. He gathered the flowers in his tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth, and did as she asked of him. When releasing the roses before the Bishop, they all saw that the Blessed Virgin has left upon the tilma an image of herself. The simple garment, which should not have lasted more than 20 years time, has shown no sign of decay in all the years from 1531 to the present and still defies all scientific explanations of its origin. Shortly after the shrine was built, 9 million natives of the region, devoted for centuries to a polytheistic religion involving mass human sacrifices (to the order of 20,000 to 50,000 a year), were converted to Christianity. It was a conversion unprecedented in all of history. In 1531 Our Lady appeared so that the surge of human sacrifice would come to an end. It is now Our Lady's wish that the sin of abortion be purged from the land.
