ONYM = “name”

Also ONOMA
Greek ὄνομα, ὄνυμα; -ωνυμ- (combining form)
(View Greek text as a graphic) (Note on Greek spellings of this word)

Spelling Hint

Note that the root is ONYM and not NYM. Prefixes such as anti and epi lose their final vowel before the initial o of ONYM: ant-onym and ep-onymous. Other prefixes usually link with an o anyway (such as pseudo and acro), but technically the o here belongs to ONYM. Likewise, the prefix syn is followed by the o of ONYM instead of forming the nonexistent *synnym or a misspelled *synanym.

Level One

  • [dict] antonym [ANTI] a word that means the opposite
  • [dict] homonym [HOMO] a word that is spelled the same but has a different meaning
  • [dict] synonym [SYN] a word with the same meaning

    Level Two

  • [dict] acronym [ACRO] a word composed of the initials of the words in a phrase
  • [dict] anonymous [AN] without a name, such as an unsigned letter or a donation given without thought of recognition
  • [dict] pseudonym [PSEUD] a false name, such as an author's pen name
  • [dict] onomatopoeia [POE] a word which "makes" its own name, such as buzz or clang

    Level Three

  • [dict] allonym [ALLO] the use of another name
  • [dict] autonym [AUTO] the use of one's own name, as opposed to a pseudonym or allonym
  • [dict] endonym [ENDO] the name used within a country, such as Deutschland for Germany, as opposed to an exonym
  • [dict] eponymous [EPI] giving one's name upon something, such as volts being named for Alessandro Volta
  • [dict] exonym [EXO] the name used outside a country, such as Allemagne or Germany instead of the endonym Deutschland
  • [dict] metonymy [META] figure of speech in which a closely identified object is named instead; e.g., in "The White House made a statement," the White House is metonymy for the President or his administration
  • [dict] patronymic [PATER] named for the father, such as Anderson or MacDougal
  • [dict] antonomasia [ANTI] the use of a title instead of a name, such as "Your Highness" or "His Eminence"
  • [dict] onomancy [MANCY] divination by names or the letters of a name
  • [dict] onomasticon a compilation of proper names or specialized terms

    Notes

Ancient Greek had several different dialects, and spelling would reflect pronunciation. The Attic word was ὄνομα, which gives us ONOMA, while the Aeolic had an upsilon: ὄνυμα. This upsilon appears in the "combining form," in which the first omicron is lengthened to an omega (-ωνυμ-), and which is the origin of ONYM spellings.
