UC
Berkeley High School Band Day
Saturday, September 27, 2008
Revised Sept. 21, 2008
Wear: Full uniform, worn on your body (berets should be labeled inside
with your name/number on a tag) - there will be no place to change
clothing, so don’t bring extra stuff (except guard members should bring
a light jacket that they can wear, remove, wear, etc.).
Bring:
1. Instrument/equipment, flip folder, and lyre (including extra reeds
[you have been rotating them, and always have 3 extra ones, which are
performance-ready, right?], drumsticks, neckstraps, your mouthpiece,
flags, etc.) The only front ensemble percussion we will bring will be
the portable kind (i.e. you can carry & run with it…contrary to
popular belief, you can not run with timpani) (No, we are not playing
Night Watch at this football game, nor are we playing the SJSU HSBD
music, either...see next point)
2. Music-Big C, Fight for California, & China Grove
3. Bag lunch labeled with your name and American High School (no glass,
bottles, or cans -- boxes of juice, carton drinks are okay) or lunch
money
4. Avoid mayonnaise and eggs, in your lunch, because the potential for
them to go bad is higher than other foods
5. Nametags for supervisory positions (RAs, instructors, DM, etc.)
6. Do not bring unnecessary items, like bags or backpacks. All
bags will be searched. Bags larger than 14” x 14” x 6” will not be
allowed into the stadium. The following items are not allowed: video
cameras, cans, glass bottles, hard coolers, weapons or chains, alcohol,
illegal drugs, smoking, hard fruit, umbrellas, animals/pets, fireworks,
Frisbees, banners, sticks or poles, hand cuffs, noise makers, horns, or
thunderstix.
7:15 A.M. Band room open - come dressed in uniform
7:35 RA/Student leadership meeting
7:45 Stand in parade block in Rotunda. Be on time!
7:47 Check in with Responsible Adult (RA) before loading the truck with
all equipment and your lunches.
7:50 Load and leave for Union City BART (adults will need their own
$7.50 BART ticket - blue). Form 2 orderly lines and wait for the signal
to enter the station. Red (student group rate) BART tickets will be
distributed at the entrance to the station & then collected
immediately, once you pass the gate.
8:35 Board BART (with full uniform on) and head for Cal (Downtown
Berkeley station)
9:35 Arrive at West Circle of campus. Check in with RA. From here, we
will march to the rehearsal field. (Remember, you get P.E. credit for
marching band.)
Depending on the location of the rehearsal field:
A. Unload quickly, leaving cases in the truck. Bring everything you
need for rehearsal, lunch and the performance.
B. If we can drive the equipment to the rehearsal field, then we can
have the truck meet us, and pick up our equipment at that point in
time. At 10:10am, unload quickly, leaving cases in cars. Bring
everything you need for rehearsal, lunch and the performance.
10:30 Rehearsal at Memorial Stadium(?)
11:15 Campus tour -- do not wander off alone. Students with large
instruments (bari sax, tuba, percussion, etc.) will leave their
instruments on Maxwell Field. (Maybe, IDK, pay attention)
12:30 Lunch in Memorial Stadium -- do not leave the stadium - you won't
be allowed in again [Check in with RA once we find our seating section,
before using the restrooms, and go in pairs or groups, never alone].
Remember that you represent yourself, the band, Mr. Wong, the school,
& the city of Fremont, therefore, if there’s anything that you
think you would get in trouble for doing, then don’t do it. (They are
watching you.)
2:45 Watch Pregame show – clap/sing along
3:00 Enjoy the football game, cheer for Cal & the Cal Band (do not
play in the stands, at all)
2nd Quarter - 8 min. on game clock - go to field, line up on sidelines
(stay out of football field of play areas) - at 1 min. on game clock,
you should be lined up and ready
Halftime - Football team leaves, Cal Band performs the Hip-Hop Show,
then Cal Band Percussion starts a cadence and then you jog onto the
field for the performance. After the performance, return to our
assigned seating section in the stands.
6:30? Post-game and Parade back to West Circle. Check in with RA. (N.B.
If you get separated from everyone else, meet at our special designated
area, on Maxwell Field, where we placed our large instruments earlier
in the day.) Be prepared to play King Cotton or We’re an American Band
on the parade through the campus.
7:17? Board BART and return to Union City. If you plan on leaving
directly from the Union City BART station and not returning to AHS,
then call for your ride when we near the Hayward station, so that they
will be waiting for you, when you arrive at Union City.
8:00? Arrive at Union City BART station. Check out with RA, if leaving
directly from the station. A parent/guardian must sign you out.
8:05? Load vehicles and return to AHS, and put everything away before
calling for your ride. We will need at least one RA to stay at the
Union City BART station until all band members have been picked up or
have returned to American High School.
Reminders:
•Do Not take off any part of your uniform until we get back to school.
Hang up your uniform properly and let it air out 24 hours before
placing it in an unzipped uniform bag.
•The weather will be cold, then hot, then cold, as we go throughout the
day. Plan accordingly. (Thermal underwear, thinsulate...)
•Do not play in the stands during the game. Play only when instructed
to do so by the director.
•Support the team. Cal is our host. It is rude to root for the other
team, as guests of the Cal Band. "Go Bears!"
•Parents are invited to call 510-744-9632, to find out when we will
return from the game, if there is a change in the schedule. Listen to
KGO 810 AM to find out when the game ends. If there is not a change in
schedule, then the message you hear will not be updated.
•We will need drivers, to help get us to the BART station in the
morning and when we return from the game/performance. If you can stay
and help drive after dropping off your child, we would appreciate it.
If you can help drive students back to American High School at the end
of the day, we would appreciate it, as well. Thank you!
