8:00 A.M. Band room open
8:15 Band Leadership Meeting
8:20 RA Meeting
8:30 Stand in parade block in Rotunda, wearing t-shirt and shorts, with
your complete uniform in garment bag in 1 hand and flip folder (&
music) and lyre in the other hand, complete instrument/equipment in
case next to you (unless it was preloaded the night before). Be
punctual! If you are not performance-ready (i.e. hair not done, no
shoes or gloves or beret, incomplete uniform or instrument, missing
music, missing flip folder or lyre, etc.), you may not be allowed to
perform & points will be taken off your grade - refer to the
grading policy.
8:35 Check in with Responsible Adult (RA) before loading truck and bus
8:40 Load truck with uniforms and remaining equipment
9:00 Load buses and head for San Jose State Spartan Stadium
10:15 Arrive at San Jose State Spartan Stadium. Unload quickly. Take
everything off the buses, as they will leave. (The truck will stay.)
Bring your music! Eat your snack and drink water after unloading and
before playing.
10:45 Move into the stadium for rehearsal.
11:00 Rehearsal inside Spartan Stadium. Band directors will help with
the setup of the concert form, so please follow instructions quickly
and efficiently.
1:45 P.M. Rehearsal ends
2:00 Barbecue lunch provided by SJSU (free for participants and
directors). SJSU Band needs to go first so they can get dressed for
tail-gate playing.
3:45 Change into uniform. Put the uniform on over your shorts and
t-shirt. (Guard, use restrooms. If there are none available, bring your
uniform into the stadium and then change in the restrooms there.)
4:20 Cross 10th St.
4:30 Go to stadium seats in the North End Zone – this area will be
marked with school name. You will sit by sections. As this will be our
first full band football game, look to the returning members to help
you find your seat. (If in doubt, ask a leader - i.e. section leader,
captain, marching assistant, ADM, DM, instructor [do not ask the Band
Director until ALL other channels have been exasperated/exhausted]. The
magic word is hidden somewhere in this schedule.)
4:50 Watch Spartan Band perform pre-game show
5:00 Game begins. Be prepared to play in the stands, when conducted to
do so, by an authorized person. Watch for cutoffs, as our team (San
Jose State, our hosts) will get penalized if music is still happening
while the ball is in play. Stop playing completely as soon as either
team breaks the huddle. Represent yourselves well. If you absolutely
have to, you may get food and use the restroom before the 1st quarter
ends. Otherwise, you should remain in the stands, with the rest of our
group, ready to play. (I recommend watching the game - due to possible
errant footballs flying your way, the Spartan band, socializing with
your section/seat mates, and enjoying the overall college football game
atmosphere. The fewer band members we have in the stands, the less
opportunity there will be for us to play.) Do not wander around by
yourself. Go in pairs or groups. Check out and in with your RA.
6:30? Approximate time of half-time show (start moving with 5 minutes
left on clock in the 2nd quarter)
After the game ends: Load buses and return to AHS.
Upon return to AHS, everyone needs to help unload everything off the
busses first and truck second, as we are paying for the buses, until
they return to their bus yard. Leave the bus as clean as you found it
(or cleaner). Within half hour of our return, everything should be put
away, and rides need to be on their way to pick you up. Do not wait for
someone to tell you to call for a ride. Do not assume that they
remember to pick you up.
A) Do not take off any part of your uniform during the football
game(s). Hang up your uniform properly and let it air out 24 hours
before placing it in a zipped-up uniform bag.
B) The weather will be hot. Plan accordingly. Wear sunscreen. Bring
water. Bring water. Bring water. Drink it.
C) In the past, we have had issues of students becoming dizzy (magic
word) or ill from the amount of physical exertion and heat
throughout the rehearsal and game. These issues can be avoided by
getting enough rest (i.e. sleep) the night before, eating a healthy
breakfast, drinking water, using sunscreen, etc. (basically doing all
the things your parents/guardians tell you to do, which you hear over
and over again at band rehearsal.)
