(53 Merk, 69 Vette, 66 Chevy II, 55 Chevy, 57 Chevy, 911 Porsche)
George, another friend of mine, works with me and is an engineer/
remote sensing scientist. He also grew up in Northern Virginia but attended
a different high school than Annandale. He used to live in Fort Hunt Alexandria
and knew the guy that sold me the big block I put in the green Nomad. George actually
help this guy build a couple of cars including the 37 chevy coupe that the guy tried to
sell to me. George has not seen him since the mid 60s. George like me is a card
carrying NRA member; and today George is an avid hunter. Anyway, George had a bunch of
cars during the 60's and 70's. He had a 53 Merk and 69 small block Vette. He, like
Andy, also had a 66 Chevy II, but originally George's came with a stock L79 (327/350hp)
and powerglide. He blew up the powerglide and then installed a M21 Muncie 4 speed (good
choice in 4 speeds). He also had a 55 Chevy in which he installed a big block Olds
motor. He mounted this engine about a foot back. He built his own fireall and
used a modified Hydromatic transmission with a 456 rear end !!!!. To adjusted the
distributor he would reached under the dash - while sitting in the shotgun seat! He
then installed this engine in a 57 Chevy.
The last car he rebuilt was a 70 911 Porsche. He was telling me
that one night he went to a wrecking yard. He jacked up the rear of another 911 (1974)
and took out the transaxel by himself; later he installed it in his 70 911. He also
replaced several parts of the pan and other body parts. George did get into a few street
races, as with me, they were unavoidable. He did pretty good against seemingly greater
odds so he must have put his cars together right... Besides being a first rate
USGS scientist, he is an accomplished welder, body man, auto painter, and hunter.
I hope George will provide some pictures.
George is considering the Datonna kit and another friend Gerry
(see Gerry's Bass fishing WEBsite)
is considering AC Cobra kit (see http://www.factoryfive.com/).
