Mainframe Languages

Summary

COBOL/COBOL II

COBOL and COBOL II are the primary mainframe languages used throughout Rick's career. Rick has used COBOL to write programs using a variety of databases and terminal processing monitors. Terminal processors used with COBOL include IMS/DC, CICS, and Dialog Manager. Rick has written program using DB2, IMS DB, IDMS R, Oracle, and System 2000 databases. Rick has written programs using VSAM, variable length records, tables, internal sorts, and subroutines.

PL/I
Rick has written PL/I at McDonnell Douglas, GM Wentzville, and Union Pacific Technology. At McDonnell Douglas, Rick supported the MCS system which was written using CICS, IMS DB, and VSAM. At General Motors in Wentzville, PL/I was the primary development mainframe language at the time. A CICS system was written using VSAM files to store the data. This system consisted of nine screens, two batch easytrieve report jobs, and a general batch utility job. PL/I was not the primary language at Union Pacific technology. Rick was required to convert a series of C language programs to run on the mainframe computer using the PL/I language.

FORTRAN
Rick's FORTRAN experience is limited to two locations. At McDonnell Douglas Rick wrote several small FORTRAN programs to perform some engineering calculations and display the results. At Union Pacific Technologies, Rick converted some FORTRAN utility programs to COBOL.

ALC
Rick's primary assembler language experience was gained at Master Card international. One project required the conversion of a System 7 assembler programs to a 370 assembler format. Another project required a assembler language driver using CICS to replace the functions performed by a Series 1 and System 7 computer. At McDonnell Douglas, several utility programs were written in assembler.

MVS JCL
MVS JCL was a required skill at many companies throughout Rick's career. Rick has used MVS JCL to implement batch test and production jobs. Rick has used the MVS utilities and syncsort to perform various job functions. Rick has some limited experience using DOS/VSE JCL. He supported the Engineering Management Control system at McDonnell Douglas in the late 1980s. The system ran on a IBM 4341 computer and the batch production jobs ran using DOS/VSE JCL.

Easytrieve Plus
Rick has used Easytrieve to create reports at Mercantile Bank. He has also used Easytrieve as a utility language to fix or extract data on production files at Master Card. Rick was also involved in a massive conversion of MRCS programs to Easytrieve Plus at the La Barge company.

Quick Job
Rick has used Quick Job at McDonnel Douglas for ten years primarily as a utility language. Quick Job can be used like easytrieve to produce reports quickly. McDonnel Douglas purchased Quick Job to replaced a home grown utility language named Utility Oriented language (UOL).

VS BASIC
Rick has learned VSBASIC in the late 1970s. Several small programs were written but no significant projects were written using this language.
