 D A Bm G D A AsusA
First time he saw the ground get busted he was ten and it was nineteen fifty two
     D A Bm
His daddy worked hard from sun up to sun down
      G D A AsusA
and the going got tuff hind them old grey mules.
   D A Bm
The farm grew to be a money maker
     G D A AsusA
and the house he lived in grew up room by room
       D A Bm
The boy worked hard but soon got tired of farming
      G A D
So he slipped away one night beneath the harvest moon.
                       G D
his neck was red as Alabama clay
                            Bm A
but the cities call pulled him away
                             G D
he's hot a factory job and runs a big machine
                              A D
he don't miss the farm or the fields of green.
       D A Bm
Now the cities just a prison without fences.
   G D A
His job is just a routine he can't stand
    D A Bm
and at night he dreams of wide open spaces
     G D A
fresh dirt beneath his toes and on his hands.
      D A Bm
Then one day a picture came inside a letter
     G D A
of a young girl with a baby in her arms.
       D A Bm
And the words she wrote would change his life forever.
    G A D
So he went to raise his family on the farm.
                       G D
his neck is red as Alabama Clay
                           Bm A
X2 now he's going home this time to stay
                              G D
where the roots run deep on the family tree
                         A D
and the tractor rolls through the fields of green.
            G D
His neck is red......as Alabama clay.

G D
They packed up all his buckles
                 Em C
And shipped his saddle to his dad
G Em
And by the way the house looked
     Am D
She must have took it bad
G
The workers come on Monday
                               C
To fix the door and patch the wall
     G D
They say she just went crazy
     Em C
The night she got the call
G D
He was up in Wyoming
           Em C
And drew a bull no man could ride
G Em
He promised her he'd turn out
        Am D
Well it turned out that he lied
            G
And all the dreams that they'd been livin'
                   C
In the california sand
Em D
Died right there beside him
      C
In Cheyenne
CHORUS:
C G
They say she just went crazy
D G
Screamin' out his name
         C G
She ran out into the ocean
    Em C
And to this day they claim
            G F
That if you go down by the water
               C G
You'll see her footprints in the sand

'Cause every night she walks
    D C
the beaches of Cheyenne
INSTRUMENTAL BREAK: REPEAT INTRO (G F C G G D C)
G D
They never found her body
         Em C
Just her diary by the bed
G Em
It told about the fight they had
         Am D
And the words that she had said
        G
When he told her he was ridin'
                              C
She said then I don't give a damn
       Em D C
If you never come back from Cheyenne
REPEAT CHORUS
C G
Nobody can explain it
D G
Some say she's still alive
C G
They'd even claim they've seen her
       Em C
On the shoreline late at night
          G F
So if you go down by the water
               C G
You'll see her footprints in the sand
'Cause every night she walks

the beaches of Cheyenne

Standing Outside the Fire
Tom: A
Intro: A Asus4 A Asus4

             A
We call them cool
                  Asus4 A
Those hearts that have no scars to show
              C#m D
The ones that never do let go
             Bm E E7 E6 E
And risk the tables being turned

               A
We call them fools
             Asus4 A
Who have to dance within the flame
              C#m D
Who chance the sorrow and the shame
           Bm E E7 E6 E
That always comes with getting burned
        F#m E
But you got to be tough
     D A
When consumed by desire
      F#m E D E A Asus4 A Asus4
Cause its not enough just to stand outside the fire
               A
We call them strong
             Asus4 A
Those who can face this world alone
              C#m D
Who seem to get by on their own
         Bm E E7 E6 E
Those who will never take the fall
             A
We call them weak
             Asus4 A
Who are unable to resist
              C#m D
The slightest chance love might exist
         Bm E E7 E6 E
And for that forsake it all
           F#m E
They're so hell bent on giving
D A
Walking a wire
   F#m E D E A
Convinced it's not living when you stand outside the fire
D E A
Standing outside the fire
D E A
Standing outside the fire
F#m E A D
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
          Bm E A
If you're standing outside the fire
             D
There's this love that is burning
C#m
Deep in my soul
Bm A
Constantly yearning to get out of control
D
Wanting to fly
C#m
Higher and higher
Bm C#m D E NC
I can't abide standing outside... the fire
Nice percussion solo (or just play A) then back to the chorus

That Ol` Wind
Tom: E
Intro: E C#m A B7 E
                E
She dropped her boy at school on time
         C#m
One less worry on her mind
         A E B
Now it's off to work and on the radio
          E
Comes an old familiar song
             C#m
And then the D.J.'s voice comes on
                  A B7 E
And says he's back in town tonight for one last show
     E
Her eyes well up with tears
             C#m
God could it be it's been ten years
           A E B
Since that Autumn night outside the county fair
             E
When two strangers shared a night
           C#m
And in the darkness found a light
               A B7 E
That to this day is still alive and burning there
C#m A B
He asked her twice to come along
C#m A B
They said good-bye at the break of dawn
             E
'Cause you can't hold back the wind
        C#m
If it's meant to be again
          A B7 E
Then someday he'll find his way back to her arms
BREAK: A B E
         E
The marquee misspelled his name
           C#m
And not too many people came
A E B
But that didn't matter to them
                   E
They laughed and loved all through the night
            C#m
And as they faced the morning light
       A B7 E
They found themselves standing there again
C#m A B
And he asked her twice to come along
C#m A B
They said good-bye at the break of dawn
       E
As his bus left out she cried
         C#m
With him standing by her side
         A B7 E
That ol' wind had once again found its way home
INSTRUMENTAL BREAK: E C#m A E B
                     E C#m A B7 E
C#m A E
Someday he'll tell her about the money he hid
C#m A E B
And someday she'll tell him that the boy is his kid
            E
For right now they're both in love
         C#m
The only thing they're thinkin' of
                  A B7 E
Is that they're finally where their hearts have always been

What She's Doing Now
Tom: D
Intro: D A Bm G A
[verse 1]
 D A Bm G A
Last time I saw her it was turning colder but that was years ago.
D A Bm G D/F# Em A
Last I heard she had moved to Boulder but where she's now I don't know.
  G F#m Bm G D/F# Em A G D
But there's something 'bout this time of year that spins my head around.
                 A Bm G A D
Takes me back, makes me wonder: What's she doing now?
[chorus]
         D A/C# G A Bm A Bm
'Cause what's she's doing now is tearin' me apart.
  Bm A G A D
Fillin' up my mind and emptying my heart.
D A/C# G F#m Bm
I can hear her call each time the cold wind blows,
        A G A
And I wonder if she knows--what she's doin' now.
[verse 2]
 D A Bm G A
Just for laughs I dialed her old number, but no one knew her name.

Hung up the phone, sat there and wondered if she'd ever done the same.
   G F#m Bm G D/F# Em A G D
I took a walk in the evenin' wind to clear my head somehow.
               A Bm G A D
But tonight I lie here thinkin' what's she doin' now?
[chorus]
         D A/C# G A Bm A Bm
'Cause what's she's doing now is tearin' me apart.
  Bm A G A D
Fillin' up my mind and emptying my heart.
D A/C# G F#m Bm
I can hear her call each time the cold wind blows,
        A G A
And I wonder if she knows-
       D A/C# G A Bm A Bm
That what's she's doing now is tearin' me apart.
  Bm A G A D
Fillin' up my mind and emptying my heart.
D A/C# G F#m Bm
I can hear her call each time the cold wind blows,

And I wonder if she knows--what she's doin' now.

Just the other night and a hometown football game

My wife and I ran into my old high school flame

I guess the Lord knows what he's doin' after all

That Summer
Tom: G
   G Em
1. I went to work for her that summer, a teenage kid so far from home,
                            C D
she was a lonely widow woman, hell bent to make it on her own.
                                    G
We were a thousands miles from nowhere,
                                   Em
wheat fields as far as I could see,
                                    C - D
    both needing something from eachother,
                                     G
not knowing yet what that might be.
                            G Em
2. Till she came to me one evening, hot cup of coffee and a smile,
                           C D
in a dress that I was certain she hadn't worn in quite a while.
                                   G
There was a difference in her laughter,
                                Em
there was a softness in her eyes,
                                 C - D G
and on the air there was a hunger, even a boy could recognize.

                             D - C
She had a need to feel the thunder,
                                 G
to chase the lightning from the sky,
                                 C D
to watch the storm and all it's wonders raging in her lovers eyes.
                           Em -D-C G
She had to ride the heat of passion, like a comet burning bright,
                         C D
rushing headlong in the wind, out where only dreams have been,
                          G - C - G
burning both ends of the night.
                              G
3. That summer wind was all around me,
                               Em
nothing between us but the night,
                                  C
and when I told her that I'd never,
                                     D
    she softly whispered, "That's alright!"
                                     G Em
And then I watched her hands of leather turn to velvet in a touch,
                                C - D
    there's never been another summer,
                                 G
when I have ever learned so much.
                                                    - C - D - G
    + REFRAIN (We ..........eachother ..........we)
                             G
4. I often think about that summer,
                                     Em
the sweat, the moonlight and the lace,
                             C D
and I have rarely held another, when I haven't seen her face.
                             G
And everytime I pass a wheat field,
                               Em
and watch it dancing in the wind,
                              C
although I know it isn't real,
                  D G
I just can't help but feel her hungry arms again. + REFRAIN
                             C D
rushing headlong in the wind, out where only dreams have been,
                              G - C - D - G
burning both ends of the night.

If Tomorrow never Comes

    G Am - D C G - C - G
1. Sometimes late at night I lie awake and watch her sleeping,
           D Am
    she's lost in peaceful dreams,
               D C G - C - G
so I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark.

And the thought crosses my mind, if I never wake up in the morning,
      D Am D C G - C - G
would she ever doubt the way I feel about her in my heart.
G C G
If tomorrow never comes, will she know how much I loved her.
                    D Am D C G
Did I try in every way to show her every day that she's my only one ?
           G7 C
And if my time on earth were through,
                        D Em - D - Em
and she must face this world without me,
                               Am C D
is the love I gave her in the past gonna be enough to last,
      D7 G D - C - G
if tomorrow never comes.
  G Am - D
2. 'Cause I've lost love ones in my life,
                        C G - C - G
who never knew how much I loved them.
           D Am
Now I live with the regret
                  D C G - C - G
that my true feelings for them never were revealed.
                             Am - D
So I made a promise to myself,
                                  C G - C - G
to say each day how much she means to me,
          D Am
    and avoid that circumstance,
                      D C D G - C - G
where there's no second chance to tell her how I feel. + REFRAIN

So tell that someone that you love, just what you`re thinking of,
          C Am-D - G
    if tomorrow never comes.

Much Too Young

     Bm Dm
Just give me an hour and then
     E E7
I'll be as high as that ivory tower
                   E
That you're livin' in
                  A
Chorus: Coz I got friends in low places
                         A Bm
Where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases my blues away
                       E
              And I'll be OK
                  A
Now I'm not big on social graces
                                             A7
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
                 Bm E A
So I've got friends in low places
(repeat till you get blue in the face)

The cowboy Song
Tom: C
    C F C
1. Pushin' horns weren't easy like the movies said it was,
             \ G
and I don't recall no dance hall girls or hotel rooms with rugs.
                  C F C
You worked hot and tired and nasty, rode you pony's head too low,
                                       G F
there were all the nights you couldn't sleep 'cause it was too damn cold.
                       C G C
And you'd sing, "Strawberry Roan" and "Little Joe".
             C F C
2. Like the time we hit the river and the rains began to fall,
            \ G
and the water was rising so damn fast we thought it'd drown us all.
        C F C
We lost a lot of steers that day and four or five good mounts,
             \ G F
but when all the boys rode into camp we knew that's what counts.
                 C G C
And we sang, "Yippee Ti Yi Yay" and "Amazing Grace".
        Am Em F C
Or the night they broke behind us, and then they took us by surprise
    Am Em F G ~
I whistled out to Bonner I seen the terror in his eyes.
        C C7 F
And he rode for all his horse would ride and I know he done his best,
     C G F
but he crossed over Jordan ridin' Dunny to his death.
              C G C
And we sang, "Bringin' in the Sheaves" and "The Rugged Cross".

        C F C
3. So when you see the cowboy, he's not ragged by his choice,
       \ G
he never meant to bow them legs or put that gravel in his voice.
                C F C
He's just chasin' what he really loves and what's burning in his soul,
                        G F
wishin' to God that he'd been born and hundred years ago,
                   C G C
still singin', "Strawberry Roan" and "Little Joe".
