Rooftop Spa Addition Atlanta, GA Gardner Spencer Smith Tench & Hensley Architects
This project was designed by one of my colleagues. I did the visualizations. The raytracings were created using AutoCAD 2002, ACAD2POV, and POV-RAY v. 3.6. The client actually rejected these images with the complaint that they were “too precise”. I learned a valuable lesson: when a client has not requested photoreal renderings, to provide him with such is not necessarily good service, and may in fact be risky.

Daytime close-up of the spa. The plants are freebie meshes from 3Dcafe.com and the water is a POV-Ray primitive with interior, IOR, normals and specular reflection. Fun! Radiosity was used in this image. Notice that some of the curved geometry lacks enough polygons to create smooth curves. This results from exporting AutoCAD solid geometry in ACAD2POV, and may be avoided by using ACAD2POV primitives.

Nighttime of the previous camera view. There is a single area light placed at the bottom of the pool. The waterfall fountain is a solid shape with appropriate interior, IOR, reflection etc. and a normal value that transitions from smooth near the spillway to bumpy and turbulent near the lower basin.
