David Winmill married Alice Barnes, both from Halmdon,England. David
got a free pass to the US, but they were unable to land in the US due to
an embargo (Civil War). So they landed in Toronto, Onterio, Canada. Then
they went on to Chicago, Ill. David and Alice had 9 Children. The young-
est was Fred C. Winmill (my great-great grandfather) who was born on the
boat in Stainer, Canada on September 19, 1863, but clained he was born
in Chicago, Ill. The Winmill's lived in Chicago through the big Chicago
Fire Octo. 8, 1871. After the fire the Winmill's believed that Chicago
would never rebuild,, so they moved on.
According to my great uncle Guy Elmer Winmill who was born on Sept. 28
1902 in a covered wagon in Stanton, North Dakota, there was a feud
between two brothers that split the family and half went with the name
Wennel and the other half changed their names to Winmill. I do not know
how true the story is or if it happened in England before they came.
