From Steve Avery (averysteven@home.com)

Steve Avery, currently in route to MA after completing 21 years of Naval service, rowing has never left my thoughts, it's the greatest sport there is and I thank Coach Lineberry for introducing me to it, I only regret that I rowed for only one year but I will be trying to get into a local rowing club when I get settled in MA

Great website! I am thirilled to see that WP Crew is still so strong!  Please add to the history section that the 1987 Womens' Varsity 4 won a gold at Nationals under the direction of Julie Scott.  I was the varsity coxswain in '87 and that was definitely the highlight of my high school career.  Thanks and keep up the good work!!!!!  Best of luck with the new boathouse!

Excited to see the site! I am not sure I can make the dedication but will if at all possible.  Give Bert my best and one suggestion would be to add an email link for emailing the coaching staff.  I need to catch up with Bert. My only feedback is that there should be more in his bio about his impact on his rowers.  In my opinion he is one of the greatest men and leaders I have had the pleasure to work with.  Keep it up.

From George Linney

Dear WPHS Crew,
Thanks for sending me information about the upcoming dedication.
Unfortunately, I am running a marathon in Charlotte that weekend or else
I would have done my best to be there.  I only rowed one year at Winter
Park, but it was without question the most important sports team that I
have ever been a part of.  The best I ever do to relive those old days
is get on an erg and beat myself up for a "500" or two, but as all of us
connected with rowing know, that's not the same as being on the water.

I'm a director at a summer camp for girls called Illahee,
and right now we are busy recruiting staff for next summer.  Please feel
free to keep sending me information.

I don't know who reads these e-mails, but if someone can forward this to
Coach Bertossa, I would appreciate it.  Dan, I hope you and your family
are doing well.  My parents are now in Charlotte so I don't get back to
Winter Park much anymore, but the next time I do, I will give you a
call.  I see Chris Rikard from time to time, since we were both Furman
graduates, but if you see Sam, Cameron, Hugh, Brad, or any of the rest
from 1993, give them my best.  I miss those days.  We didn't necessarily
have the end results we hoped for, but that doesn't matter much
anymore.  The work that we put in and the friendships we made were what
really mattered.  Thank you for being such a great role model and
friend.  I'm sure you are having the same impact on rowers and chemistry
students now, that you had on me back then.

Thanks for everything,

George Linney, Class of '93

I am a former rower.  I rowed in 1982.  It's great to be an alumni and continue supporting the endeavors of WPHS Crew!  I am also a friend of Kim Kunihiro (parent of current rower Emily Kunihiro).

From Nora Stevens L'Heureux (nlheureux@cfl.rr.com)

I was a coxswain for the 1978-1979 year and was an assistant coach for Jim Cooper in 1987 (or 1988).

From Jim Mitchell (I was "Jimmy" in those days) (jmitchell4@cfl.rr.com)

A small correction to the history: I was the coach in 1973.  After graduating in 1971, I assisted Coach Wray in 1972 and was named coach for 1973.  I coached for only the one year as I left for college the following fall.

I was varsity coxswain at WPHS for '70 and '71; in 1969 I was on the Edgewater crew team making the varsity by the 3rd race.  Bob Garapic, who passed away in 1993, was my stroke at WPHS.  (Dennis Kamrad was my coach at Edgewater)

If I remember correctly, the 1970 team was the first to row on Lake Howell, using the southwest shore.  The 1971 team moved to the current location.  I believe the property used to be owned by the Heidrich family (?).  Redbug was just a 2 lane road then and we would run from the practice site to near 436 and back.  Hard to imagine that now.

I rowed ( stroke )my senior year 1972. Man that was a long time ago. I do have a picture of our crew on lake Howell I will bring with me.

From Mark A. Tarmey (HUFFTARCH2@aol.com)

I was coxswain for WPHS 72-74, undefeated in the State of Florida, and attended Nationals Sophomore and Senior years in Deleware. My father, Ted Tarmey was was an organizer and founding member of Florida Schoolboy Rowing Association and one of the first Race Officials when only 4 crews competed annually; WPHS, Edgewater HS, Howey-In-The Hills Academy and Sanford Naval Academy, (now defunct). Sanford was replaced in 73 season by Jax Episcopal. While at WP we raced most of the teams visiting Rollins including Coast Gaurd Academy, Morris Harvey (where then coach Clark Wray went on to coach)and Priceton University. The undefeated 72-73 team raced Princeton at DineyWorld beating them by more than a boat length and proudly claiming a Princeton Orange and Black rowing jersey for our impressive "losers" shirt collection. Boasting the WORLD'S FATTEST COXSWAIN,(ME at 5'-6" and a very lean 128 LBS,probably felt like an anchor at the rear of the shell! I was probably one of the last generat!
ion of male Coxies, and ocassionally rowed BOW in practice in order to fill out a JV boat. I finally grew a little in college, and am now 6', 225; finally big enough to row, but alas old and out of shape!),but in those days, my crews bested anyone who would get on the water with us, including UCF (then FTU) and Rollins. Please give my regards to Skip Sandberg(stroke), John Ross (7), Ken Scott(6) David Loy;aka "Budda"(5) Rich O'Neal(4)Tim Scott(3)Scott Lyden(2)and John Scogberg(bow);Best wishes to all of the teams and coaches, past, present and future.
P.S. I am the Principal and Owner of Huffman/Tarmey Architecture in Tallahassee. We support the Leon Crew and would have GLADLY designed the Boathouse for the team pro-bono!

From Dick Talley

Unbelievable.  Today I got the postcard announcement of the WPHS Crew boathouse dedication.  Unfortunately it is Saturday and I live in Colorado so no way can I make it there, but I was fascinated by the history of the team.  I was one of the original ten who rowed the blue and white Optimist Club boat that we "lovingly" nicknamed "The Barge" because it had been fiberglassed and weighed a ton.  I rowed for two years, 1962 and 1963 (an error in the history on the web site) as a junior and senior.  It was one of the truly memorable experiences of my high school years and a welcome diversion from the pool as I was basically a swimmer.
Anyhow,  I am responding to the note about buying an oar.  Absolutely!!!  We are building a log home on a lake in the mountains and I will proudly display it.  Give me some more information if you would.  I, of course, would prefer to have an oar that had been used at the national championships.  A winning one would be a nice touch!
I'm genuinely pleased and impressed with the success of the program and am stunned at the number of kids involved.
Best of luck and keep me on your list for future contacts and donations.

I rowed 3 1/2 years, am randomly coming home from school this weekend and am excited to be a part of the ceremony!!
Any chance we can get out on the water!?!?!?

From Beth Price (blp999@aol.com)

It looks wonderful!  I am so excited that you all have come so far.

From Robert A. Roy (royr@genium.com)

I was a member of the founding crew 1961-1962. After HS I rowed at Rollins. In 1973 I helped kick off a new rowing club in Schenectady, NY, where I had moved to work for the General Electric Company. I am still on the board of the Aqueduct Rowing Club (new website:http://home.nycap.rr.com/rowaqueduct) and I still row every season and erg with other members in the wintertime. I had the great pleasure to bump into a number of WPHS Crew members at the Head of the Charles several years ago and was pleased to learn how successful the program had become.

Started from the Aqueduct boathouse were the crews from Union College and Niskayuna, Burnt Hills, and Shenendahowa High Schools, whom you may have raced against. The sport continues to grow!

Although unable to be at the new boathouse dedication, I would like to give you my "Optimist Hustlers" sweatshirt from the first year of WPHS rowing as an historic momento for the wall of the new boathouse.
