A Backwards Glance
As I approach my fiftieth year
Looking back on what I’ve done
The road to travel is no more clear
Than when I was twenty and one
I sipped at the bar long ago
Found it to be a circular road
Soon I would come to know
It would not lighten my load
Moved on to a colorful world
Of weed needles and pills
Soon my surrender flag unfurled
As that was the path that kills
At thirty and seven I took a wife
And did marry her unto me
Was not yet prepared for that life
And soon again I was free
The domestic life I sought again
In my forty-ninth year of life
Found this to bring only pain
The answer is not in a wife
So I now face my fiftieth year
Alone afraid and confused
With very little being clear
And a heart weary of being abused
