Ray Kowalski woke up thinking that a gorgeous blonde was kissing him passionately, Well that had been what he had been dreaming, anyway. He started awake when he realized he was still being attacked. "Dief, he growled, if you ever want to see another jelly doughnut, you better stop that right now.".
Dief wisely decided to stop and he sat primly beside the bed looking as innocent as a lamb in Wolf's clothing. Ray muttered: "Why did I ever agree to keep you while Frazer is in Toronto visiting his good friend Marion? Maybe I should just take you over to Frannie's Oh , it's Valentine's weekend and she has plans with Turnbull."
Dief whined "Yeah, it's you and me Furface. Will you be my Valentine?'
Dief leaped up on Ray and gave him a slobbery lick on the face. " I will take that for a yes." he chuckled.
Ray put on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt and he started his coffee machine. Then he and Dief left his apartment. They jogged to the park. Ray was zoning and did not notice that Dief had dropped behind. When he felt something bump him and then something else brush his butt, he thought it must be Dief. He opened his eyes and he noticed Dief. He was munching something and standing on the other side of a person. A female person, a female person who had just patted Ray's tush. She looked at him and said, " You had a bunch of powdered sugar on your pants. I hope you don't mind." Ray looked at the woman. Then he looked at the wolf. Powdered sugar covered his snout. Ray couldn't believe it. The wolf had set him up. But, hey, if she wanted to pat his butt, that was okay, a little forward, but okay, "Your dog stole. my doughnut and then ran and bumped into you. I don't usually go around patting strange men on their bottoms. Not that I think you are a strange man. Oh, golly I'm blithering" .
Ray decided to put her out of her misery. He chuckled and said: "Dief will do practically anything for a doughnut. Tell the lady you are sorry Dief. I guess we owe you a doughnut And he isn't a dog, he's a wolf."
Meanwhile he was thinking: " Does anyone say ` Gosh', anymore". Dief, meanwhile had turned on the charm and offered both his paw and sad. contrite puppy eyes to the woman. She giggled and took his paw. "My. what big eyes you have." She said.. Ray snorted.
They had begun to walk. "My name is Lys said the woman. Ray introduced himself and they walked companionably toward the park exit. When they came to the bakery, they went inside and bought Lys a replacement doughnut and Ray bought a couple more for Dief and himself and some tea and coffee.. . They went back outside and sat at the outdoor tables When they had finished. Ray found himself and Dief, of course being invited to Lys' house for dinner the next night. As he and Dief walked home, Ray patted him affectionately.
Friday morning after Ray showered and got ready for work, he and Dief headed to the 27thDistrict. Dief ensconced himself under Ray's desk and took a nap. In a little while, Dief wandered out from under the desk and padded over to Dewey's desk where a small boy was sitting on a chair crying. Dief gently put his head in the boy's lap and the boy patted his head and ten hugged him tightly. Ray came over and learned that the little boy had become separated from his family and Dewey was trying to find out his name. address and phone number. The boy sniffled looked at Ray and asked "Is he a wolf?"
Ray replied; "Indeed he is. His name is Diefenbaker. Diefenbaker meet..."
The little boy snuffled. Joey, my name is Joey."
Slowly Ray and Dewey learned that Joey was visiting his Aunt Kay and they had become separated. While Dewey began to try to locate Aunt Kay, Ray decided to take Joey into the Break Room to get him juice. Meanwhile Frannie was watching the boy and man walk off hand-in- hand with the wolf sticking close to the small child.. She smiled to herself. Her pretend brother pretended to be bad and unfeeling, but she knew he was a kind man and she knew he loved children. He treated his pretend nieces and nephews like real family. Frannie decided to make an effort to be at home when Ray dropped off his Valentines for Ma and the kids later that day. It would really be no effort, Turnbull had come down with a raging case of dishpan hands and had canceled their dinner plans Welsh called for Frannie and she returned to her desk thinking of how surprised Ray would be when she would give him his Valentine and then would kisse him not like a sister. She returned to her desk and dreamily cast Ray and herself into a lurid romance novel complete with heaving bosoms, gleaming swords and a wolf.
Frannie's reverie was interrupted when suddenly a woman rushed over to the table and started to reach for Joey. Dief growled and palced himself between the boy and the woman.. Joey assured his Aunt Kay that Dief was only protecting him. Aunt Kay listened as Joey told her all about Dief being a wolf, but a good wolf, not a big bad wolf. She smiled charmingly to Ray and thanked him for taking such good care of her nephew. Then she invited Ray and Dief for dinner on Sunday.
Friday after work, Ray pulled up in front of the Vecchio house, They got out of the GTO and he and Dief carried their various Valentine's gifts up to the porch. Dief carried a bag with a cruller in it for Ante. Paulie let them into the house .The family was just finishing up dinner, so everyone was in the dining room, everyone but Frannie. Ray distributed his gifts and Dief gave Ante her present. She nuzzled him happily. Everyone was pleased with their Valentine's gifts and thanked Ray He admired the Valentines Maria's children had made for him. He was just going to leave Frannie's gift on the table, because he was supposed to be at Lys' house in an hour. Ma told Ray that Frannie would be down in a moment. Ray began to make his excuses when Frannie appeared in the doorway. She was dressed in a red garment that accentuated her various curves. She invited Ray into the living room. As soon as they were alone, Frannie draped herself onto Ray and gave him a most thorough kiss. Ray broke the kiss and stared at Frannie. He backed out of the room muttering something about having to be somewhere. When he reached the safety of his car, Ray got in and laid his head on the steering wheel. He sat in the car and looked at the wolf beside him. "What the heck was that all about?" He asked the wolf.
Dief whined and butted Ray. In a while they drove off. They arrived at Lys' address and got out of the car. Ray got the flowers out of the backseat and Dief insisted on carrying the candy box. They entered Lys' house. The meal was delicious and dessert was wonderful. After the meal Ray and Lys spent a pleasant evening. Lys made it very clear that she would not be adverse to Ray's advances and advance he did. Finally at midnight he and Dief returned to Ray's apartment contemplating Lys' invitation to return Saturday night. . Ray told her that he had a previous engagement and promised to call her and set up another date.
Saturday morning Ray had to take Dief for his annual check-up. Dr. Jean was a vetrinarian and an animal psychologist.. Dief was one of her favorite patients. And his companion ,Constable Fraser was one of her most enigmatic. He was one of the most attractive men she had ever seen, but he also seemed to be one of the most clueless. Her receptionist, Fiona, shamelessly flirted with the man and he seemed totally oblivious to her rather obvious fawning..
Dr. Jean was a little disappointed when Dief entered her examination room without Fraser. She soon perked up, however when she realized hoe attractive the tall blond accompanying Dief was. Jean was quite the professional and she did nothing untoward, but she did file away in her impeccable memory, the man's name for future reference.
On the way back from the Vet's office, a woman rushed up to Dief and enthusiastically hugged the wolf. "Dief", Janice said, "I haven't seen you for a long time. Who is your new friend?"
Ray introduced himself and rather rudely excused himself and Dief by saying they were late for an appointment. Janice disappointedly watched them leave.
That evening Ray and Dief arrived at Kay and Joey's hotelsuite.. He was pleasantly surprised to see that she had ordered room service and had especially ordered a steak for Dief. Joey went into his room and watched videos. Dief decided that watching videos would be more fun than watching Ray and They spent the rest of the evening on the couch.
When Ray had at last found refuge in his own bed, he yawned expansively and patted Dief affectionately. He had not realized how Fraser had stoically endured such constant attention.
"You sly, dog, you. All this time I thought Fraser was the Chick Magnet, but it was you, all the time People may think he is God's gift to women, but we know the women are really the dog's gift to him Thanks for sharing, Buddy. Happy Valentine's Day." and he fell exhausted into a deep sleep.
Happy Valentine's Day
