an oh-so-mild R

Single Entendre
Sasscat

"Fortunately Ray was positioned at the back entrance..."

Ray tuned in automatically at the sound of his name, then wished he hadn't as he realised Fraser was just talking to Elaine about the case. Elaine was watching the Mountie with an air of rapt fascination, probably wasn't hearing a word he was saying, and Ray had to fight down proprietary hackles with the reminder that no one knew about him and Benny yet, and a jealous hissy fit in the middle of the squadroom would not be the best way to break the news.

"...entered just in time; I wasn't sure I could hold out much longer..."

Ray opened his eyes wide and hoped he wasn't hearing what it sounded like he was hearing. Fraser *was* talking about their last case, right? Of course he was. The way it sounded was just... an accident. Hell, Benny probably thought 'entendre' was a small town somewhere in French Canada.

"...was somewhat relieved. I wasn't sure he'd come."

Ray choked, dropped everything, hurried over to Elaine's desk and yanked his Mountie unceremoniously away.

Fraser spluttered. "Ray-- *Ray*! What do you think you're doing?"

"What the hell was that, Fraser?" Ray hissed.

"What was what?"

"That... what you were saying!"

Benny blinked those huge eyes at him innocently. "I was just speaking to Elaine about... are you all right?"

Ray pulled on Fraser's arm, keeping walking. "I'm sorry, it just... sounded bad."

"Bad?" Benny squinted slightly. "Is something wrong with my voice? Do you think I'm coming down with something?" He put a hand on his forehead anxiously.

Oh God. Ray rolled his eyes, relaxing slightly. Of course Benny had been talking about the case. This was *Benny*, after all. "No, Benny, it sounded bad, like... sexual."

Fraser stumbled slightly, gulping air. "Oh," he finally managed.

"Yeah," Ray said with a grin. "Would you believe I actually thought you were talking about sex? You, the poster boy for polite conversation." He shook his head, laughing at himself in relief.

Fraser briefly flicked his eyebrows upwards. "Well, you did say you wanted to be open about our relationship, Ray--"

Ray choked and just missed walking into a wall.

"--But I assumed you just meant with your family, which is why I steered my conversation with Elaine towards the conclusion of our recent case."

"Oh," Ray managed weakly. "Good. Yeah."

And unseen by Ray, Fraser smiled a wickedly evil smile as he followed his partner out the door.
