Trick or Tundra

I walked quietly about the cabin, straightening the throw on the back of the love seat. The babies had fallen asleep for their afternoon nap, and I was alone. Dief whined, reminding me the error of my thoughts.
I bent down and ruffled his fur, then straightened the 'devil' headband he wore for Halloween. "I'm sorry Dief. I thought he'd be home by now. I'm sure you can show him your costume tomorrow."
The wolf laid his head back down on his paws, dejectedly. I sat down beside him and leaned against the love seat. A rustling outside caused my heart to leap into my throat. Dief didn't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary though, and I thought that I was perhaps, imagining things. After all, it was Halloween.
Shaking my head, I chalked it up to my imagination and went to the counter to check on the caramel popcorn balls I made earlier. It just didn't seem like Halloween without them.
I jumped when there was a knock on the door, and looked around the cabin for something I could use as a weapon. I'd never had anyone visit the cabin before, and Ben had always told me to be cautious. My eyes rested on the shot gun above the door, but I quickly dismissed the thought. Whoever it was had to be friendly. After all, there wasn't a lock on the cabin door. They could have barged right in!
Making my way slowly, I opened the door cautiously but didn't see anyone through the crack that I had it open. Opening it further, I leaned out and looked on the porch in both directions. Nothing.
Something told me not to venture outside. I didn't have my parka on, and besides, in all the horror movies I'd ever seen, when the person went outside they were as good as dead. I closed the door quickly and shuddered as I crossed my arms for warmth. Fighting with the idea of sliding the table in front of it for security.
By the time I made it back to the kitchen, another knock sounded. I almost dropped the popcorn ball in my hand as I spun around. Glancing at Dief, he didn't seem to notice, and I swallowed down my misgivings as I went back to the door.
"Who is it?" I called out, but there was no answer. I practically screamed though, when the knock sounded again! Deciding to face my fears head on, I reached for the door and swung it open quickly!
Shock made me take a step back, and I stared at the sight in front of me.
"Trick or treat"
I stared at Ben, dressed as a......a......*vampire*?? And he was holding both Jacinda and Robert! They both were wearing headbands over their parka hoods. JC had ghosts on hers, and Robert sported pumpkins!
Breathing a body shaking sigh of relief, I smiled as Dief whined, coming to the door. Ben looked just as pleased to see Dief's costume, and it was then I became aware of the bag Ben held open by his finger tips, since he held a twin in each arm. They seemed to have slept through the entire ordeal.
"Hold on"
I left them at the door as I got the tray of popcorn balls. Placing one in Ben's bag, I smiled at him as I shook my head. Where on earth did he come up with that costume? Dief whined and I looked down to see him also holding a bag open.
"Here you go Dief." He trotted off with his prize as I took Robert from Ben.
He followed me inside, and to the nursery. Making sure the babies were
settled once again, I turned to ask him just *how* he managed to sneak them out of the house!
Before I could utter a word, he scooped me into his embrace.
Whispering, Ben nuzzled my neck, and I could tell the white makeup he was wearing was rubbing off. When the fake teeth he wore tickled my skin, I laughed and he carried me out of the room before the babies woke.
"You know," I laughed when we were back into the main room, "I feel kinda left out. After all, I'm the only one without a costume."
Ben's eyes took on a mischievous gleam as he dug under the cloak he was wearing. He pulled out a piece of black and white material, handing it to me.
I looked over the small thing, and my mouth dropped open as I looked at him wide eyed. He then proceeded to pick me up and carry me into the bedroom. I shook my head once again at the french maid's costume I was holding.

The end.
