How did you find out about cosplaying?
Truthfully, it wasn’t one of those things I went avidly searching for. My sister was getting into this whole thing and started explaining it to me and showing me websites of people who did cosplay. I had heard of Role-Playing Games or Live Action RPGs and I figured they were the same stuff, but this time it had to do with my favorite subjects: anime and video games! The biggest exposure I’ve had to understanding cosplaying was when I first saw the website of Adella who was cosplaying Aeris. At first, I was kinda creeped out that walking around there was a live embodiment of Aeris from FFVII. But, then, the more I looked into it, I realized that it looked very cool and it took a lot of talent (and time) to create such awesome costumes. So, my sister showed me the site Cosplaylab.com and that’s pretty much been my cosplaying education since then. Tal was also telling me about this anime fest in NY called AnimeNext and told me about all the cool stuff there. So, that perked my interest.
Of all hobbies WHY??? cosplay?
Hobby? Er, not really. The first cosplay I’m doing is for the Otakon fest on
30 July. I was checking out Cosplaylab.com and at the same time surfing for a
graduation present for Tal and lo and behold, there was a fest being held an
hour north from where I live. It was a perfect opportunity for Tal to attend
another fest, showcase her newest costume, and for me to buy a Kendo sword (and
possibly the ceremonial blades)! (Yes, it’s all about the bad @$$ swords,
people). Originally I was not planning to walk around in a costume, but that’s
the whole nature of the fest, so I figured why not? Besides, I felt kinda bad
letting my sister walk around in a costume by herself.
Now, before you all start getting ideas of me being all into this, let me tell
you: I am highly uncomfortable at the thought of walking around in a pink dress
(see Aerith pics) and worst off, if people are gonna start role-playing with me.
I’ll walk around the costume, but don’t expect me to jump on stage and get all
IC (that means "in character " folks), I will be OOC ("out of character" aka
"ouch ouch crunch") very much, thanks.
But, I’ll give cosplaying this: It definitely takes time, definitely takes
some measure of talent, and the thought of being in a really pretty costume is
very nice. I give massive, massive props to many cosplayers (my top 3 are Adella,
Lord Masamune, and Alaria), who do an awesome job of making characters come to
life. It’s like Disneyland, anime style! Haha…but, um, I don’t think I’ll make
it a hobby, but if a fest comes around, I think I’d consider jumping into a
costume.
And, sewing can be quite relaxing…..damn Handi Stitch! The process of creating
costumes is fun though, you definitely tap into the Right Side of the brain,
it’s neat. But between clothes and weapons, making the weapons was the most fun.
If I don’t personally cosplay again that wouldn’t be horrific, but making the
weapons, that’s a deal for me. Once again, it’s all about the swords, people.
