FINAL FANTASY X RIKKU COSTUME

Worn On: Halloween 2003 aka Otaku Promise Bet 2003

Video Game: Final Fantasy X (not the more revealing FFX-2 one -__-; )

Intro: Well this is my first EVER costume ^_^ I am kinda happy with it, not too much to complain about except the inaccurate colors I had. I had to make it for the “Otaku’s Promise Bet of 2003" I made up with my friends. We have to dress up as an anime char for a day at school. I think my costume turned out good though since I used basically only things from home and used practically less than $5.

So all in all I’m really proud of what I did and worked hard on it. Besides I’m only a teen with limited sewing skills! I chose Rikku because I think she was one of the easiest and most fun costumes to do. The first costume I was suppose to do was Tifa which was easy, but not so recognizable and I don’t think it would have been called a “costume” in my school. Although I did think about doing Yuna, but the kimono/obi was too hard to make, even if it is just half of one. There was also Selphie , but the hair was a biggie (but I am still making her nanchaku outta paper mache’ ^_^’)

SO I finally decided to stick to Rikku. Besides she is my fave character up to date in the FF series. She is the character I can relate to the most, like: short (her- 5’1, me floating somewhere around 5’0 soon), age (her- 15. Me- 13), and personality (BOTH BUBBLY AND KAWAII ^_^).

Construction Notes:

Top:  I have to admit I was kinda lucky for this part. My mom had a shirt like Rikku’s so I didn’t have to make the top ^_^ I sewed up some black cloth (the same black material as I used for my gloves, armbands, and legband/pouch) over oaktag strips to make it nice and neat. Then I used silver wrapping paper and oaktag to make it look like there was metal on it. That’s how I made the buckles. Then I just sewed them to the orange top.

Ribbons: Okie, this was a fairly easy task. I went and bought a 2 yards of dark blue ribbon (instead of light blue, <sigh>) and cut it in half. Then I used white nail polish and made the little flower design. It turned out messy up close, so I decided not to do the lines on the sides. I also did make a little version of the ribbon holders. I just cut out circles of oaktag and wrapped it in silver wrapping paper. Afterwards, I put cheap air fresheners on them (what? they look exactly like Rikku's ribbon holders!!!)Then, I just taped them together. I made it stay on the shirt (w/out ruining it) by sewing snaps to my ribbons and on the top so that I could those on and off just in cases on some “accidents.” ::mumbles how she just knows her friends are going to tug on her ribbons) -____-

Shorts: I could find or make Rikku shorts so I just used my army shorts that I have. Now you know why I look hella weird in my pics -__-;;;;;;

Belt: HAH! I was fortunately able to make a belt cover! YAY~

Gloves: For this I had to use black material that I sacrificed from my old black strechies (T_T) I just made a glove by tracing my hand and sewing. After redoing this a thousand times I got it right (YAY!) Then for the light brown glove I bought a dishwashing glove. Then, I painted it brown. Also, I sewed black straps to it. Unfortunately, the paint cracked so I just used a large black glove

Armbands: I used the black material again for this. I just sewed it up into a band and enough to cover part of my arm. For the band, I also put a pearl snap-button and a buckle from my old school uniform (<gasp> omg my uniform has a purpose besides being ugly ^ O ^)

Legband/Legpouch Thingy: Umm dunno what this is called but I did make it. I used the same material as the gloves and armbands. First, I drew the pattern of it on oak tag. Then I cut it out and sewed on the black material. I used snaps and velcrow to take it on and off. On the side I sewed on a camera bag for the pouch.

Boots: Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make a boot cover, so I did this instead: I got a pair of creamy-white knee highs. Then I got green material from my mom's old skirt. Then I sewed/stapled them some how together. For the top part, I used the strechy part of black stockings and then used the material again. I sewed them together along with a feather on each “boot,” stringed with some pearl beads. Lastly, I sewed on some buttons that I painted sliver with nail polish. As for the shoe itself, it was low ankle cut. Unfortunately, the color was WAAAAAAY not accurate, it was <mega-sigh> really light-brown/caramel-colored instead of black/dark brown.

Necklace: I just stringed some pearl beads together on elastic. I know that technically it should be purple and yellow beads, but who judging, right ^_~

Goggles: Bought some black goggles at Model’s for 7 bucks. I’m sure you can find cheaper ones, but I needed these for swimming anywayz. Again I was lazy (and poor) and I didn’t make the red strap <sigh>

Earrings: I had some pearl earrings…so yea that’s all!

Hair: For this I just styled my hair like Rikku. I have really long hair and put it in a pony tail and use a clip in the back to make it look shorter ^_^ Anywayz, I used a blue scrunchie, feathers (see how to make below), and two pins. I had green and blue pins handy, but if you just use nail polish on bobby pins, that works too. But I still wonder how I would look like with a blonde wig…… ::thinks::

Feathers: Tee hee, this is one of the more funnier and weirder costumes parts. I bought 4 (2 for hair, 2 for boots) really cheap and ugly looking feathers. Then I colored them with an orange washable marker and washed it. AMAZINGLY, it worked just like dye. Was very happy with this. ^_^
