"Heero. . . .ya know we're gonna die, right?" Duo asked his lover, his pale arms slowly snaking around Heero's taunt stomach.

"Hn. . . ." Heero commented, his chin resting on the crown of Duo's head, his Prussian blue eyes slowly drifting shut.

"Heero. . . . . ." Duo prodded, gently poking the monotonous pilot of Wing Zero. Heero opened an eye. "Why do people die?"

"Hate," Heero answered softly, so softly that Duo had to strain to hear. "Hate is what kills people, Duo. Now, go to bed."

Duo sat up late that night, thinking about what Heero had said. Then. . . "Aishiteru, koi," he mumbled, cuddling closer to the warm boy.

Silence. Finally, when Duo had begun to think that Heero had been asleep, "Aishiteru, Shinigami."

Duo grinned, then fell asleep, his cheek pillowed against Heero's flat chest.

Heero kissed Duo deeply, his tongue dancing with Duo's own. They were at the spaceport, waiting for the next ship to Colony L7. When neither had any air left, Heero finally pulled away.

"Dr. J wants me to complete this mission, Duo. I can't get out of it. But I do promise to come back to you once I'm done," Heero said, smiling softly at the pilot of Deathscythe Hell. "And. . . . .once I come back, I'll do this properly."

Heero smiled mysteriously and handed Duo a velvet box. Curious, Duo opened it. And his eyes widened at what he found. A ring. A wedding ring.

Duo looked at his koi. "Heero. . . .?" he asked softly, a wondering tone in his question. A bright light had begun to form in his eyes, the shine of tears unmistakable.

Heero opened his mouth, about to reply. Then his eyes widened in shock as he felt the bullet enter his body, pierce his heart, and shoot out of his chest in a splatter of dark red blood.

He fell onto his knees, Duo quickly catching him. "Ai. . . . .Aishiteru," he whispered, blood filling up his mouth. And then, he closed his eyes.

Heero did not reopen them.

"H-Heero?" Duo asked, eyes wide. Then, "HEERO!!!"

Duo stared at his reflection in the mirror. His violet eyes looked shadowed; haunted. He kissed the wedding ring that Heero had given him one last time, then brought the gun to his head.

He closed his eyes and a lone tear trickled down his cheek, marking a pathway that many more before it had traveled.

And then. . . . .

Duo pulled the trigger.
