Part Twenty-five
by Dannie and Rinny

A sharp rap sounded on the door to Joey’s apartment at 5:45 that evening as Joey was getting ready for her evening out with Jen.

Joey struggled to put on an earring and one of her shoes at the same time as she stumbled to the door. Jen had said six, but maybe she had arrived earlier than expected. When she finally opened the door; she wore both earrings but was still trying to fix the strap of her heel. She looked up from her shoe in surprise when she saw it wasn’t Jen at the door and her cheeks flushed slightly. “Hello, can I help you?”

“Yeah, I’ve got a delivery for Josephine Potter,” The man said, not even bothering to look at her, it was his last delivery for the day and he just wanted to get home.

Joey stood up straightening her dress. “That would be me.”

“Sign right here,” he pointed to a line on the bottom of a sheet of paper and handed her a pen.

She automatically took it from him and began to sign her name. “Do you know what it is?”

For the first time, the man smiled, “You don’t know?”

She shook her head. “No. I really wasn’t expecting any deliveries.”

“You’re in for quite the surprise then.” He handed her a set of keys. “I’ll take you down.”

Joey looked at him curiously as she glanced at the keys in her hand. “Down?”

“Downstairs.”

“What’s downstairs?”

“The delivery.”

“Oh.” She shut the door to her apartment after making sure to grab her keys. “So what did you say it was again?”

“I didn’t.” He headed down the hall to the elevator. “If you don’t know, than I’m sure it was meant to be a surprise.”

“Then do you know who it’s from?”

“Me? No, I don’t. But you can call the supervisor, he’ll know.”

“It’s not very big, is it?”

“It depends what you consider big.”

She tilted her head thoughtfully, wondering what it could be.

They road the rest of the way in silence until they arrived in the lobby and the deliveryman walked with her out the double doors. “And there she is,” he pointed to a medium sized delivery truck with the “Ben and Jerry’s” logo on the side.

Joey’s eyes widened in surprise. “There must be some kind of mistake.”

“Nope, no mistake.” He shook his head, “The truck, and all it contains, is yours.”

She developed an uneasy feeling in her stomach. “I don’t want it. Take it back.”

“The truck is refrigerated, you don’t need to worry about the ice cream melting.” The man told her.

“Can’t you just take it back?”

“I can’t.” He told said regretfully, “I’m officially off the clock in ten minutes. “You can call us in the morning and have it returned if you’d like.”

She just nodded helplessly staring at the truck in front of her in disbelief. “Um, okay.”

“Have a good evening, Miss. Potter.” He tilted his hat to her and then headed for one of the company cars that his partner had followed in while he drove the truck.

Joey bit the inside of her cheek as she stared up at the truck. She couldn’t quite believe it.

Jen drove her sporty two-door Neon up to Joey’s building and climbed out, wary of the short hem of her fire engine red dress. She slung her purse over her shoulder and started up the walk to the doors, but paused when she saw Joey standing in the middle of the sidewalk staring at a Ben and Jerry’s truck. Her brow furrowed, she approached her friend, “Jo?”

After a few minutes Joey finally turned to Jen, a small frown on her face. “Hey.”

“You know, if you really want some ice cream, we can get some with dinner,” she teased.

“Or I can just get some from my truck!” Joey exploded. “Do you see what he did?!”

“Huh?” she took a step back in surprise. “What who did?”

“I got a delivery today,” Joey stated tersely and stepped back from the truck. “Ta-da.”

“He gave you a truck of ice cream?”

“Yes.”

“But I thought...”

Joey sighed. “What?”

“I thought that you said he didn’t love you?”

She bit down on the inside of her cheek, even Jen saying the words hurt. “He doesn’t.”

“So then why would he...?”

“I don’t know.”

“What are you gonna do with it?”

She shrugged. “Probably send it back.”

“But...he sent you a truckload of ice cream,” she stared dumbfounded at the truck.

She would have smiled but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. “So.”

“The man sent you a truckload of ice cream. Not just any ice cream, the best ice cream in the world.”

“He’s probably just feeling guilty.”

“When a guy feels guilty he sends flowers, not a truck full of $6 a pint ice cream!”

“It’s not like he can’t afford it besides I’m not keeping it, I’m sending it back.”

Jen hooked her arm through Joey’s, “He hurt you bad, didn’t he?”

“It seems like a really big bribe.”

“Maybe it’s not. There wasn’t a note or anything with it?” She gently directed her to the car.

She shook her head. “No.”

“Hmmm, weird.”

“Let’s just go. I don’t even want to worry about it anymore.”

“Right.” She unlocked the passenger door. “Don’t even think about him, or work, or ice cream. It’s just us.”

She swallowed and nodded. “Right.”

Jen climbed in on her side and revved the engine. “Let’s go!”
