Vegetarianism
Do you want to be healthier, save animals, solve the world's hunger problems, and help the environment?  If you answered yes to any of these questions then you are ready for vegetarianism!  Everyday students like you and me are faced with one question three times a day.  What should i eat?  As a college student I too am faced with that question and I choose to live a vegetarian lifestyle.  It is because of my extensive research and beliefs I feel that a vegetarian lifestyle should be the only way to live.  In this essay I will include why there is a need to change, what your plan should be to make a safe transition into vegetarianism, and why it is practical to change to a vegetarian diet.

Let me now show you a healthier, moral, and more efficient way to live your life just by only changing your diet.  In the world today there is a need for change towards a vegetarian lifestyle.  Why?...Because of
health reasons, the treatment of animals, and our bodies are not physiologically suited for an animal based diet.

Be a vegetarian for your health if nothing else.  There are many diseases that can be easily avoided by adapting to a vegetarian lifestyle.  Just recently a group of doctors known as the PCRM, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, who are also part of the American Medical Association, report "numerous epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that vegetarians are nearly 50% less likely to die from cancer than non vegetarians." This is because a vegetarian diet tends to be lower in fat and higher in fiber and beta-carotene.  The PCRM also noted that breast cancer rates are lower in countries where the diets are typically plant based. When the countries adopted to a meat eating diet the breast cancer rates soared. (Preventive Medicine and Nutrition) Avoiding cancer is not the only health benefit in being a vegetarian.  Others include: Preventing heart disease and lowering blood pressure.

Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the United States.  One person is killed every forty-five seconds.  This means by the time you are done reading this paragraph someone has died from heart disease.  The next person could very well be someone you know.   The PCRM states that a male who eats meat has a 35% more of a chance of a heart attack than a person who is a vegetarian. More benefits are preventing and reversing diabetes. Preventing and alleviating gallstones, kidney stones and osteoporosis. And preventing and alleviating asthma.  There are also major diseases that are directly linked to eating meat.  One example is Mad Cow disease  Mad Cow disease is the disaster disease that hit overseas as a result of today's new methods in the meat industry.
The farmers are trying to save money by grinding up left over bits and pieces of animals and feeding them to other cows.   By eating a cow with mad cow one would get the deadly CJ disease. CJD is a fatal brain disorder that causes rapid and progressive mental deterioration, involuntary movements, blindness, weakness of extremities, and coma.

Health benefits are only one reason of many to be a vegetarian.  The inhuman treatment of animals is another reason to convert to vegetarianism. Animals are creatures with their own wills and it is wrong to force our will upon them just because we can. Many people still think that farms are like the ones we read about in books where all the animals are happy.  In the harsh realities of today the worlds' farms are like mechanized factories where an animal's welfare is no concern. What is it like for an animal in the modern farm?  These cows and chickens live their short lives caged, drugged, mutilated, and deprived of their most basic freedoms.  On average U.S. farm hens spend all their lives from birth to death in a battery cage with a floor no larger than the size of a vinyl record cover.  They live on wire floors that deform their feet and the cages are too small so they cannot even stretch their wings.  Covered by excrement from other hens living above their cage, the chickens suffer lameness, bone disease, and obsessive pecking.
Look at theses pictures because I certainly can't.  This is what happens to animals, to meet the demands of the meat eating population. So next time when your about to eat meat think about these pictures, and all the pain and suffering that goes on just to provide you for that one meal. I want you guys understand something very clearly.  If you don't like what you see in these pictures you do have the power to change it by a simple change in your diet. I know I wouldn't like to live in those conditions. Would you?   People who come face to face with what happens in slaughter houses cannot help but be in shock at what happens in there. People living near by slaughterhouses often report loud screams of terror and anger from animals.

So now you are wondering well I know being a vegetarian is healthier, and moral. But aren't humans supposed to eat meat to survive? A recent argument against meat eating is that humans are not physiologically suited for an animal-based diet. In a recent book called Food for the spirit of Vegetarianism in the World Religions, Steven Rosen notes.  Many nutritionists, biologists and physiologists offer convincing evidence that humans are in fact not meant to eat flesh. Here are some examples why many believe this theory to be true. Carnivores have long claw-like teeth for killing and holding prey. Carnivores don't sweat through their skin; rapid breathing and extrusion of the tongue control their body heat. Carnivores have large quantities of HCL acid to help them dissolve bones. These are three of many good comparisons to what the normal flesh-eating animal should be. It is very clear that we do not possess the same characteristics as flesh-eating animals.
Even after all this evidence of why people should convert to vegetarianism many of you might still feel like you will not be able to meet all the essential nutrients in a healthy diet.  A common myth is that a diet without meat is a diet without protein and essential nutrients.   A meat free diet can easily meet your protein and essential nutrient needs. For those of you who are familiar with the food pyramid you can tell that only one portion of the original food pyramid needs to be changed.

So where can you get all the nutrients missed by avoiding meat products. Protein can be easily found in many products they include: lentils, tofu, nuts, seed, and peas.  Many common foods such as whole grain bread, potatoes, pasta, and corn quickly add to protein intake. Calcium can be found in collard greens, broccoli, dairy products, and turnip greens. Vitamin B12 found in many animal products can also be easily replaced by eating gape nuts, soymilk, and vegetables. Now for all you who need that iron in your diet for lets say a track meet.  If I was your coach instead of saying go eat some steak, I would say lets eat some dried beans, spinach, chard, beet greens, prune juice, dried fruit, fruit juices, tomato juice, and broccoli.  Cooking food in iron cookware can also increase your iron intake.

What would you say if I told you by saving animals you could also save humans and help the environment?  That's right, by becoming a vegetarian you could solve the worlds hunger problems and conserve the earth's resources.   How can you save the worlds hunger problem by becoming a vegetarian?   You can feed a lot more people with grain directly then by feeding grain to a cow and then killing the cow. In the words of the famous musician Moby, "In a world where people are starving it seems criminal to fatten up cows with grain that could be keeping people alive."  The natural resources that exist in the world today are being wasted because of meat. Far more resources must be used in the production of meat than grains. Lets look at the water usage. The livestock population takes more than half of the water used in the United States.   While only 25 gallons of water is needed to make a pound of wheat, 5,000 gallons or water are needed for a pound of California beef. If water cost was not subsidized by the government than a pound of beef would cost $35.00. Meat eating is also consuming the world's oil.  It takes 78 calories of fossil fuels to produce one calorie of beef. Compare this to a vegetarian diet where it takes only 2 calories of fossil fuel to produce one calorie of soybean. If every human ate a meat-centered diet the world's oil reserves would only last another thirteen years. The livestock consumes 33% of all the raw materials, which include base products for farming, forestry, mining, and fossil fuels, used in the United States.  If the world were completely vegetarian only 2% of the raw materials would be used. This goes to show you that not only will a vegetarian lifestyle help you but it will also help everyone around you.

Today I have given you 4 strong reasons to convert or even just try out vegetarianism, health, inhumane treatment of animals, a solution to the worlds growing hunger population, and our bodies aren't physiologically suited for eating meat.  Please note that the transition to be a vegetarian can often times be hard.  You must make sure you are getting all the nutrients that you once were getting.   Vegetarianism is not for the weak it is for the mentally strong and those who are able to conquer their inner emotions and provide to the greater good of humanity.   So join me in living a vegetarian lifestyle along with Drew Barrymore, Michael Jackson, Moby, Ted Danson, Michael J. Fox, Mahtma Ghandi, Natalie Portman, Apu and Lisa from the Simpsons, and many more. I hope that I have at least made you think about converting to vegetarianism if not for me, for my friends, John the cow and Sarah the hen. Please don't eat my friends.
