This Course is not a:
  • Computer programming course
  • Detailed introduction to computer hardware and software
  • Detailed investigation of accounting sub-systems
Course Objectives:

The purpose of this study is to enable the students to investigate and analyze the nature of the information systems with special reference to AIS. This study reflects an effort to determine what is being covered in the area of information technology in various accounting programs. Some other objectives are to:

  • Offer hands-on experience in the operation of both manual and computer-based accounting database systems
  • Improve the oral and written communication skills of students
  • Understand accounting and other data flows in the organization
  • Appreciate the ways in which computer technology can be used in collecting and processing data to meet the information needs of management
  • Participate, with computer professionals, in all stages of the design and development of computerized accounting systems
  • Appraise future developments in Information Technology and assess the opportunities that they present for enhancing accounting systems
After this Course:

It is my goal that when students will leave this course, they will be able to take any accounting system that they encounter in practice and this will give students a sound basis for understanding the functioning of the information systems. Moreover after going through this course the students will be:

  • Able to read and write a flowchart, DFD's, use cases, sequence diagrams
  • Able to understand how systems are analyzed, developed, and implemented
  • Familiar with how a manual accounting system works
  • Able to understand the Issues and Processes involved in converting to a computerized accounting system
  • Know the basics of designing the front ends (GUI)
  • Familiar with current system topics such as security, fault tolerance, viruses, etc...
Project, Assignments & Presentations:

There will be home assignments and an extensive system analysis and design project that will ask you to build the reports/document of each step in analysis of an existing AIS in an organization. Students must also keep them prepare for Quizes in class.

Students should have to present their projects and assignments in the class

Suggestions for Students:

This is a very interesting, useful and demanding course. Please motivate yourself by doing the following:

  • Study your assigned readings thoroughly before classes
  • Try your best to understand (not just memorize) the underlying concepts
  • Do as many exercises and problems as possible
  • Review your textbook and class notes carefully after class
  • Do not hesitate to ask questions before, during or after class
