Electricity and Magnetism

Unit III

Overall Expectations

By the end of this course, students will:

The strand will be divided up into the following sequencincing of topics
You must be able to do the following:
  1. Use electrical meters, you must know what they measure, how to properly connect or use in a circuit,and their basic construction;
  2. Construct simple electric circuits using the devices at hand and comupter simulations;
  3. Draw schematic diagrams;
  4. Quantitative analysis of circuits; using the laws of circuit analysis
  5. Distinguish between conventional current and electron flow;
  6. compare and contrast direct current and alternating current;
  7. Explain magnetic field laws in permanent magnets, current carrying conductor & a solenoid;
  8. Explain, using diagrams, the components and the operation of a DC motor

The major assignment: write a report on and give a presentation on the the impact on society and the environment of an electical and/or electromagnetic technology.
  1. the communications industry, telephone, microwaves, radio, TV etc.
  2. the recording industry, from records to MP3s
  3. modern electrical appliances (a series of appliances must be investigated)
  4. GPS systems, how they work
  5. medical technologies employing electronics
  6. electronic driven musical instruments
  7. robotics in industry
  8. advances in iPod technologies
  9. the cell phone & Blackberry technologies
  10. the ultra-modern electric car
  11. you may have another idea, just ask if it is acceptable

There are ?? students in this class. A group of four is NOT acceptable.
Your report must trace the historical development of your project, with emphasis on the various advances in product development. Your report must include the impact on society of your selected topic, both enviromnetal and societal impacts. Here's an outline of what is expected:

  1. What is the purpose of the technology; a defining introductory paragraph.
  2. Trace a historical development from infancy to todays modern equipment. Make sure you list all the various improvements that occured over the years or decades.
  3. Which companies or people contributed in major ways the the developing improvements.
  4. What are the societal impact of your technology. How has it improved modern society and/or have additional problems been created that it may have tried to solve in the first place. There must be some negative aspects to the product. Make sure there is a list of them.
  5. Include pictures and some "ads" of your product. These should be pictures that can be used in your presentation.
A small presentation is required. Assessment categories will be inquiry, application, and communication.
See below for assigned dates and group members. Project must be done by Nov 28, with presentation to start on Dec 1
The first assessment of this project will be on Nov 21 when introductory, first draft will be submitted (a comm category mark)
Since class time will/ may be allowed for this project I expect you to work on this assignment in class, in your group with minimal disturbance to others. If this seem a problem there will be no class time provided and your project will be collected by Nov 28.
Let me know if anyone is not carrying out their assigned responsiblities, they will be removed from the group, however the assignment must still be completed in its entirety.
