The Guitar Pickup: A Study of Contrast
Strat & Les Paul
Faraday's law has a variety of applications in the eal world. One of these is the electric guitar whose function relies oncompletely on Faraday's law.
In this project when sound waves and electromagnetism are combined you get the electric guitar. There are two basic guitar pickup types with variations on each and how they can be combined electronically (series or parallel wiring).
You must explain how sound is transfered from a vibrating string to the electronics of the guitar, so that it can be amplified. In doing so you must discuss the engineering design of the guitar pickup.
Yor discussion must include the following:
- Using Faraday's Law explain how a guitar pickup works. Make sure you discuss how the pickup is built. Diagrams are required.
- Discuss the two types of guitar pickups with respect to how they are constructed. Disscuss sound characteristics and why you would use one over the other.
- Where are pickups positioned on the guitar and the reason why they are positioned as such.
- Explain the difference between a Fender Telecaster and the Stratocaster. What are the sound difference and why use one over the other.
- The difference in design of the Gibson Les Paul and the Fender Stratocaster.
What type of wood is each made of and why would such a wood be used?
- What are the charateristics of each guitar design that lends itself to a style of music.
- Give example of guitar players their music and the type of guitar they used, to emphasize a particular style and/or sound quality.
- Pictures of each guitar and pickup should be included.
