Biome Project

By now you have all selected a particular biome
Due Date : Dec 8
The biomes are as follows:
- Aquatic: the Great Lakes
- Aquatic Marine: the East Coast of Canada
- Grasslands: Alberta, Saskatchewan & Manitoba and right down to Texas
- Desert: American southwest
- Tiaga: Coniferous Boreal Forest
- Temperate Deciduous Forest
- Tundra: The Artic Region of Canada
- Aquatic Marine West Coast of Canada
- Temperate Rainforests of the Pacific Northwest
Each individual should contibute to the overall development , data collection and presentation (both verbal & visual display).
General Outline: Division of Tasks
Try to follow these points and develope your project in the exact order described below.
- Your project and presentation should start with an introduction which should include a brief description as to what you will be talking about. Include a map of your biome so that the listeners know where the biome is.
- Climate that encompasses your biome. Weather trends and patterns and how it dicatates the life forms found in the biome, Indicate the temperature ranges and rainfall
- Find and make a list of as many animals, fish, birds reptiles amphibians that you would find in your biome. Be specific, don't say fish, you must name the species.
Make sure you have herbivores and carnivores.
Create a food web of your selections. Try to use pictures not words.
- Main types of vegetation (fauna) found in your biome. Make sure you give specific names. Make a list of these plants and what animal use them as food.
For example don't say tree when you actually mean a maple tree
- Types of soil in this biome
- A discussion of the indigenous peoples of the biome
- Mankinds influence ==> how people have changed the biome
How mankind has caused extinction, endangerment etc (see page 14) for species in your biome. List any extinct species that once were prevalent.
Pollutions and human settlement, development in the biome
- Future of the area; is it healthy or headed for a biological disaster?
This should lead into your concluding statements or wrap-up.
Presentation Board
Should contain the following elements
- A food web
- A map with biome shaded in
- A picture of each of your animals, plants, fish etc.
- Presentation board should NOT contains paragraphs of information.
Assessment
- Make sure you get the two evaluation rubrics: one for the presentation and one for the written work. Rubric provide at
- Knowledge and Understanding:
how extensive your information is and how well you can explain yourself both on the presentation board and in group conferencing.
- Inquiry:
did you collect enough resourses to cover all the topics adequately?
- Communication:
grammar, spelling
use of ecological terms in the correct context
visual appeal of your presentation board
- Student/teacher conferencing
- Meeting of assigned dates for competion of specific
aspects of the overall project
