- Come to class every day and be ready to learn. If you miss a lesson or are late you can:
- Check the Internet or
- use the old fashion way to catch up: phone or talk to a classmate to
find out what you missed and are responsible for.
- Hand in all assignments, labs, etc on time and completed
- You will need the following equipment for this course:
- ruler 30 cm variety, clear plastic is the best
- a protractor
- a simple calculator
- highlighter
- Be prepared to do all the homework; if you don't do homework you will probably fail this course, because if you won't do the problems for homework you will not be able to
do similar problems on a test. Don't kid yourself about this; it is a statistically proven
fact that this is true.
Homework will be posted on the Internet, or listed in class, therefore there is no excuse for not knowing
what was assigned. You are responsibel to find out what you have missed.
- IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL: Do not bring or use iPods or cell phones in this class. They are simply not allowed.
Come to class prepared to work – with notebook,
textbook, and writing materials Review your notes frequently (especially before
quizzes and tests) If you are unsure of anything, ask questions and/or stay
for extra help Have someone in the class you can call to catch up, if you miss
a day (see below) Be self-motivated – you must accept responsibility for your
learning.
- TO ENSURE SUCCESS YOUR NOTEBOOK SHOULD LOOK LIKE:
- A three-ring binder divided
into four units by dividers Each page should be titled and dated.
- Tests and quizzes should be placed at the end of the material covered within it.
- Notes need to be neat, titled, and numbered. Separate sections may be needed
for unit projects
- Class time will be provide for you to do the homework assigned. So do the work in class, don't waste the time.
- Learn the material during class time, don't kid yourself in thinking you can teach yourself this material at home; YOU CANN'T.
- Ask for help or assistance when needed; use non-teaching time to get individual help.
Why come after school when you can usually get all the help you need right in class on
your time; but I am here for you if assistance is needed. Feel free to
come early (7:45 AM) for any additional help you need.
- If you are in this class and come late, don't have your books, don't do homework, don't
hand in complete assignments, skip tests then please ask yourself "WHY AM I HERE?",
maybe you should be somewhere else.
- And lastly; NO WORK = NO MARK = NO CREDIT
I can teach you but I cannot learn you !
Disruptive behavior:
Some people are just here to misbehave and hope they gain the credit. Well, it probably just won't happen. Remember, you only need two science courses, maybe this is the last one you will take,
however if you have posst secondary aspirations you may need grade a 11 or 12 science course such as
College Chemistry or Physics, hence
Don't get carried away with someone whose behavior is inappropriate; your marks will
suffer.
Unsafe lab behavior can not be tolerated: any unsafe deliberate practice will result in you
not preforming any more labs until parental contact is made. The principle will also be
informed of such unsafe behavior.
Classes end when the bell or buzzer goes, so stay in your seat until dissmissed, do not congregate at the
door whatsoever!
Miscellaneous Comments
-
LAB FEE:A fee of $3.00 will be charged to cover maintenance and replacement
of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- TEXTBOOK: Nelson Science 10 – by Ritter et al. (Nelson)ISBN: 0-17-607501-1
- Course notes are posted on the Internet. It is up to you to obtain or read
them. Try to come to class with these notes. You most often will not be copying
notes in class.
- All tests must be written; if not you get zero, no questions asked. Students
should expect to write a missed test immediately upon their return back from
an absence, unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher.
I tolerate 1 test absence, you get the chance to write the test. On the second
time you get zero; no questions asked unless I get a note from your parents.
If you are absent for a test assume that the next time you walk in the room
you write the test. No questions asked. And be prepared for this.
- Homework checks are done so that you can get some easy, free marks; so take
advantage of this opportunity.
Homework will be checked regularly and during the first ten minutes of class.
If you are late your homework will not be checked. Its
either done and in class to show me or there is no marks. Leaving it at home
gets you nothing.
I am not impressed with computers or printers that seem to malfunction the
moment something is due.
- Late assignments / labs are NOT accepted. Students must make alternate arrangements
with the teacher prior to the due date or a mark of zero will be awarded.Students
will similarly receive a mark of zero if they do not meet the alternate due
date.
- If you are absent for a lab assume that you get zero for that lab.
- One of my objectives in this course is to teach you self reliance and responsibility
and as such you will not be hounded or chased for any assignment or lab. There
are no lates.
- There will (or may) be assignments that are posted on the INTERNET. These
are to be researched and completed by each individual student. Specific time
will be alloted during certain class periods for questions and assistance;
be ready if you need the help. These have a due date and will not be accepted
if late.
- You will be expected to memorize some information;
- Labs can only be done on the assigned time frame, they cannot be done at
another time. You are cresponsible to obtain all the information and concepts
produced from the lab.
- There is no such thing as a group lab or assignment. All labs and assignments
are done and handed in by the individual.
There is no such thing as group hand-in work, unless you are specifically
told by me!
- Learn the material in the class, during class time; homework and study should
be for review, not cold learning.
- Try to be considerate and courteous to me and your fellow classmates; it
will make the class more enjoyable.
LABORATORY RULES: All science courses at STM contain varying amounts
of lab work. This lab work increases the student interest and provides the practical
skills that will be useful in later studies. There are, however, two major drawbacks:it
is potentially dangerous, and much of the equipment is expensive and fragile. If
it is mishandled, the cost of replacement is high. To minimize these two disadvantages,
the following lab rules will be enforced at all times.Students who repeatedly
break lab rules will be counseled individually. If, after counseling, there
is no improvement, the student may be withdrawn from lab activities or from
the course to ensure the safety of others in the class. All equipment must be
used according to the teacher’s instructions. Each student must know the location
of and how to use: the fire extinguisher the fire blanket the eyewash station
the first aid kit Safety glasses and other safety equipment must be worn when
instructed. the sink must be clean the desktop must be clean and dry all equipment
must be cleaned and returned to its original location no student may leave the
lab until dismissed by the teacher Students must refrain from
playing with the water taps and gas jets to avoid damage and leakage. Students
must not mark the desk in any way Under no circumstances are the
students allowed to sit on the desktops. This will prevent expensive damage to the desk
and relevant plumbing. TO ENCOURAGE CAREFUL WORK HABITS A CHARGE WILL BE MADE
FOR BROKEN EQUIPMENT IF, IN THE OPINION OF THE TEACHER, SUCH BREAKAGE COULD
HAVE BEEN AVOIDED.Usually the charge will be the cost of repairing or replacing
the damaged equipment, whichever is less.
