GIESELER PLASTOMETER
Fig: Plastometer
A Fully automatic PC-based system for the determination of plastic behavior of coals.°
Development as per ASTM 2639-90 with state-of-art technology.
TEST METHOD
5 gms of pulverized coal is packed inside a retort along with a stirrer.
Retort is immersed in a molten solder bath maintained at 300°C.
Bath temperature is gradually increased to 550°C at the rate of 3°C/ minute and the stirrer is rotated by a constant torque (40gm -inch/101.6gm-cm) motor.
Bath temperature and stirrer speed is measured in every minute to determine plastic
behavior of coal.
FEATURES:
Specially designed three zone furnace for uniform solder bath temperature (Accuracy + 1C) through a PID controller.
Torque is controlled by electromagnetic clutch coupled with DC drive and speed is measured precisely by encoder.
Bath temperature is measured by ceramic insulated K-type thermocouple.
Impressive hardware specification of Data Acquisition and control software under Windows ®.
APPLICATION:
# Characterization of coals/ coal blends by measuring.
Initial softening temperature in °C.
Maximum fluid temperature in °C.
Solidification temperature in °C.
# Graphical representation of data in user defined format.
# Storage, retrieval and comparison of data for selection of coals/ coal blends.
TEST RESULTS
Performance of the indigenously developed plastometer has been evaluated in comparison with an improved one (P-31) manufactured by standard Instrumentation Inc, USA. Large no. of Indian as well as foreign coals have been tested in both the instruments.
In plastometric test, two most important parameters such as maximum fluidity in DDPM (Dial Division Per Minute) and Plasticity Range in °C are analysed for proper blending of different coking coals. As per ASTM standard, variation of + 10% in DDPM and + 5°C in plasticity range are acceptable.
